I used to live with someone who left the t.v. on "Animal Planet" while they were gone for their black lab. =)

start by getting him a toy he can keep busy with. I use the kong toys and stuff food in there and they will be busy with that for hours if you put a large enough biscuit in there. As for Tv, our dogs and my friends cats love to watch Great Hotels with Samantha Brown. I think it is cause she talks into the camera and to the audience, so the animals may feel like she is talking to them.I would suggest leaving your dog locked up when not at home for the long periods. Then take short trips to the store and make it so your dog has reassurance that you will come home.

get a baby gate and start with one room. give it about a week and if he is good, inlarge the area, by adding a second room and continue until the whole house or what ever area you are allowing him is achieved.

I always leave a TV on, my dogs should be quite educated, I always leave it on Fox News, lol. Actually, this is because it's pretty monotone, Animal Planet or such could trigger anxiety, barking, etc.... You will have to spend some time, making short trips at first, but this can be done, no doubt about it. Good luck!
Don't leave it on Fox News Station- he will come out of the crate leaning way over to the right.
