Default leash training a one year old dog?

My dog has taken to learning basic commands like sit, stay, give paw very easily and quickly. How do I teach her to stop pulling on the leash when we walk her? She is choking herself because she is so excited to go for the walk.

Go and get the Gentle Leader Collar. You can find it at the local pet shop. It puts pressure on different areas so the dog won't feel the pressuer to pull against it. Good luck.

You have to teach her the heel command. Everytime you stop walking have her sit.... I mean every single time! After awhile she'll so use to sitting when you stop walking you won't have to worry. Also don't use a retractable leash until they stop pulling. They learn from those leashes if they tug a little more they'll get farther so they'll keep tugging. And you may want to get one of the harnesses that go around the shoulders and the belly. People like these a lot better since it won't be choking them....Good luck!!!

Do you have a heel command? Does she understand it? Get a pinch collar (more effective and safe than choke chains) and reinforce your commands with a correction. The dog must understand the command first though.

Get a gentle leader, or a Halti. You have more control over the dog using one of those than with a choke collar, pinch collar, or regular collar.Second, hold the leash in two hands. Take the loop of the leash in your right hand, preferably around your wrist like a bracelet. Hold the leash about 24 to 36 inches from the clip in your left hand, or at the point where your left hand would be on or near your waist, allowing the leash to go across the front of your body. Allow a little bit of slack on the leash for your dog to move about some. This will keep her close to your side, without pulling too much. When the dog does begin to pull, you have better control of the leash, and you can correct her more easily with a firm "NO!" while pulling the leash to the right and back towards you.I have used this method on my dog and it works very well.

I have a Jack Russel/Fiest that pulls to the point of choking herself. Try using a holt harness. (They may be called something else in your area) as well as your collar. It may end up that you won't be able to use just a collar to walk her & have to stick with the no-pull harness, but it will save the stress on her esophagus. When walking her & she begins to pull, have her stop & sit for a moment, then resume your walk. After a while she should get the idea that you want her to walk with you & not try to outrun the wind. lol

I'd recommend a Gentle Leader. We plan to get one for our pit/lab mix, as he's HORRIBLE at pulling. Also, as it could be a dominance issue, show her that you're above her (as most dogs work and live on a pack instinct), by simply going in a different direction then she's pointed when she starts pulling. Keep doing this until she gets the point that you're the top dog, and not her. This worked with a dog of mine before, he'd pull in one direction, and I'd walk in another. He soon learned that we walked where I wanted, when I wanted, and how fast I wanted. But I'd definitely try a Gentle Leader, as well, they're a LOT easier to work then trying to pull a dog in a direction he doesn't want to go, lol, ESPECIALLY if you have a large dog like I do!! Good luck!

try a harness or a choke chain the choke chain is like a collar and for most dogs stops them from pulling

Try to wear her out before you take her out, I play fetch with my dog and once he is tired he does much better. Also the more you walk her the better she will get.
