Main fact that I have learned about training a dog is be consistant. If you want them to sit, show them the same way over, over. If you are training them bathroom matters, don't skip scolding them - even if its late at night.

repetition and positive reinforcement. the more you show your dog what you want it to do, the easier it will be for it to remember... always keep training sessions less than 10 min as dogs loose concentration fast.

Here's how I've always trained my dogs to shake hands, roll over, etc.... Tell the dog "Shake" and then grab its paw and shake. Then say "Good dog" and pet him or her, and then give a treat. When they realize they get a treat by shaking, they'll keep doing it just to get the treat. Then sometimes don't give a treat. Just say "good dog" and pet the dog as a reward. Dogs like to please their owners, so they will do it without the treat, once they've made the connection of what to do when you say "skake". Once they've learned one trick, it's a lot easier to teach others. Just make sure you don't bombard your dog with a million tricks at once. Be patient

Well, the way I've always trained my dog is by giving her a treat if she gets the trick right. It is important that you use the same word you used before when getting your dog to do the trick and to make them repeat it so they can learn it. You also need patience.
