Default How do you train a dog to stop doing something it has been trained to do?

My roommates have a dog whose former owner was an elderly lady who couldn't move around too much and she trained the dog to go to the bathroom on the tile floor of her kitchen, now we can't get the dog to stop. Any suggestions? We've never been able to catch him doing it in the kitchen, although we have caught him sneaking in to do something. We take him out when we do. Doesn't seem to help, half an hour later he has left us a surprise to clean up.

Don't worry -you CAN teach an old dog new tricks!! The only thing I can suggest is diligence. treat him like a little puppy. Take him out after naps, eating, playing. Praise him (and treat him) when he goes outside. He will eventually get the hang of what you are asking from him. Just have faith.

Constant positive reinforcement with treats for good behavior. You need to be sure to try and catch the dog in the bad behavior and scold him immediatly and take him outside. Don't rub the pooches nose in it. It is ineffective, just praise and treats for doing well, scolding in the act. Dogs love the praise, just like little kids. Good luck.

I don't know about the dog but you can beat up the elderly lady! No just kidding, but you should just train him regularly to go to the bathroom outside. It might take a little more practive but who cares?
