I trained my dogs by going to the library and getting a book and videos.

That depends on what you want to train him. PetSmart has a pretty good obedience class that is not too expensive. Dogs are a lot smarter than people give them credit for. Most training focuses on teaching you how to interact with him. I found a used book at Half Price Books called Pet Speak and found that very helpful. Whatever you do, be prepared to have patience and lots of treats and praise ready.

Honestly if you are looking for obedience go to Petsmart. Or find a true positive reinforcement training. Petsmart offers that. I train there. I have trained dogs for over 14yrs. 2 of those years have been at the Petsmart in Santa Cruz. I love it and the dogs and pet parents really enjoy it.

A system of reward & punishment based on treats given when he/she complies to a command. Simulus-Response was a Behavior Psychology that Pavlov pioneered based on dogs salivating at the ring of a bell. It might help.

if you wanted him to lay down you point to the floor and say "lay down" nice but stern. then make him lay down and then veryhappily say "good boy/girl" when he does lay down give him a treat and pet him. Repeat 3 or more times a day for a wk straight. Do the same thing for shake a paw. but say "shake a paw" then grab his paw, shake ,praise him/her and give the treat! Repeat over and over and over.Good luck
