Question I need help teaching my old dog a new trick!

Hi, I was Wondering if anybody has tips to help me. I would like to teach my two dogs how to play fetch, they aren't puppy's anymore so I understand that it will be more challenging. They seem to be bored since the colder weather has started. I would like to be able to play with them in the house more and when the warm weather comes we can play outside. OK, the breed of the first dog is 7 years old and Cairn-tarrier. The second dog is 6 years old and a mix of pomeranian and poodle.I hope I have given you enough info to help me. If you need anymore info please let me know Thanks ::grin:

since both your dogs are extremely prone to luxating patellas ( dislocated knee caps ) I would advise against any activity where they are making sudden turns or any other movements.

if this should happen, it is very painful, they can't walk & if they need surgery it is very expensive - around $1,500 per knee

how about stuffed Kongs once a day?

I'm not sure about kongs. I had read really good reports about them so I decided to try one. Kyle had only had it for a few minutes and had started to bite into rubber and was eating it. I don't think they are very safe. I think it's better to play some indoor games with them where they have to think.

Kongs are suppose to be garanteed as indistructable, and you can get your money back if your dog destorys one. That being said, it depends on which TYPE of Kong, and what type of dog you have! The Water kongs (blue and white) are much easier to destroy. I had a dog chew up half of one in one sitting! That same dog took a good chunk out of one of the black ones too (Black and Red ones are suppose to be the strongest, but I don't remember which one is stronger than the other). Since her however, I've had two dogs (the ones I have now) that haven't been able to get a single chunk out of a kong. I can't really see any small breed dogs eating up a Kong either... although I guess you never know lol

Gymnast - You can always try little training sessions to work their brains, or hide small cookies around the house for them to find. Or the Nut Shell game! When I was little I had a chihuahua that loved to play this game! You take a few small containrs, hide a little treat under one and mix it up and teach the dog to point out which one has the cookie. This is usually really easy for them, dogs have incredible noses! And then they get the cookie as a reward!

I would suggest activities you can do in the house that are challenging mentally and physically. What can do both? Dog Tricks!!!;-)
