Default Walking the Dog...

Hey everyone,

I have a Lab Mix. She's very sweet, but as soon as she goes onto a leash, it's PULL, PULL, PULL. I was going to buy a harness for her, the Fit and Clik Step in Harness, but then I read on the Internet that harnesses help medium and large breed dogs pull HARDER, which I REALLY don't need. I would walk her a good amount, but lately I haven't because I've been so frustrated with it. I put the leash on her in the house and would walk her through the house without a problem, but once we get outside, with all the distractions of the outside world, she goes pretty much NUTS, practically choking herself. I found this:

Have you guys used this method? Has it worked well? What else have you guys tried? Because I am really tired of her pulling, and I would LOVE to walk her normally, with actually SLACK on the leash-that would be nice. :P

I keep myself calm while walking her, like on The Dog Whisperer, and it works INSIDE the house, but it's OUTSIDE that really matters, since that is when her leash is really on...any advice? Thanks a lot to anyone who replies.

i think you should take your dog to a doggie school where you learn first hand how experts control their dogs .
if that is not an option id get a training dvd ,where you can see the insructors techniques, along with the dogs reaction when given commands.

I have 2 Shepherds that I walk a lot. They started out on the prong cinch collars. You know the ones that look scary. (I do have rubber tips on the prongs). But now they are 2 and more assertive when they see little rodents. I hated having to keep correcting them. So I looked for something else. A trainer suggested I try the Gentle Leader. It works so good. I started to really dred taking these 2 on a walk, and now it's so nice.

These gentle leaders come with a DVD. You need to really follow the instructions. I took 3 days to introduce the new leads. Because in the beginning they tried to paw at it. So I used a lot of treats. I gave the treats as I slip the leads around there nose and so on. Until I got it on completely. Then when the day came to take them out I just walked to the end of the driveway and back. Then we took our first walk a day after. It was so great. As soon as you get the lead on for your walk, start walking right away that way he has less opportunity to paw it off.

I got my Gentle Leaders at a large pet chain and because I had a trainer suggestion I was able to exchange if it did not work out for me.

I love Cesar. He will make any lead work but the trick is to have the collar up just behind the ears. This is the weakest part of the neck. Where the collar natually sits is the strogest part of the neck. So on a large dog unless you continue to adjust a regular lead it's sometimes difficult. I hope this helps.
