I have a 4 month old german shortgair. Does anyone have any tips on potty training? What do you do if you cath the dog peeing in the house?..What do you do if you dont catch the dog and you find the pee 10 minutes or less after that?......I know that if they go outside you give them praise and treats. Does anyone have any quick tips? The dog goes to the door all the time liek she really has top go but 60% of the tuime she just wants to play. and i can take her oputsiode and bring her in and she pees. I need effective training tips for quick results if possible. Thank you in advance.!!!!

P.S- I keep dog in Crate during the day and she will go in her cage but that just becuase she can physically hold it.

What I read and am doing with my puppy is this:

Anytime the puppy is supposed to have to go (after meals, about every hour, in the morning, before bed, etc) take the puppy outside. If they go, give them lots of praise. If they want to play or run around, don't let them until they go. If they don't go in 10-15 minutes put them in the crate for 10-15 mins, then repeat until they go. If she gets you to take her outside and she doesn't go, but just wants to play, that's when you can put her in the crate for 15 mins and see if she'll go outside. Sometimes with Sadie I have to do this but she seemed to get the idea pretty quick, once we got the crate she has not done #2 in the house.

If you catch them going, pick them up and run outside! I've gone outside barefoot in the rain once already, and she finished outside. It helps to keep the puppy on a leash with you in the house until they are trained so you don't suddenly realize the puppy is in another room and it's too late.

If you don't catch them and find it later, clean it up and use an odor remover like nature's miracle to remove the smell, so the puppy won't want to go in that same spot strongly.

If she's in her crate long enough that she can't hold it and goes in there, you're not taking her out often enough. Or it might be too big. It should only be big enough to allow her to turn around and sleep, otherwise she will go in one area and sleep in the other.

ETA: When you go outside for potty, say "Go Potty". When you are going outside to play, say "play!" or something. Eventually she should learn that Go Potty means she should go, and this will help for car rides and stuff, make her go before she gets in, etc.

Good luck to both of us!

We have a 3 month old black lab mix, and she's mostly potty trained. We didn't let her out of our sight while she was in the house, and we took her to the potty frequently.

We took the dog out before and after meals, after playing indoors (this one is easy to forget), right before bedtime (last call for water is 1 hour before bedtime).

I make it a point to walk out to her "spot" every time she goes. If she gets distracted, I call her name and tell her to come here, then repeat "potty" with the "you'd better do it" tone until she starts sniffing the ground (clue that she's gonna go soon).

At first we'd get up 4 times a night with her (my wife and I alternated nights). Now the dog sleeps through the night. Sometimes she wakes up 30min-1 hour before the alarm and sits at the bedroom door (sleeps on the floor on a big doggy pillow in our room). I reach my hand out, she comes, I pet her, she gets bored and goes back to bed. She learns to hold it. I go back to sleep.

Now she generally sits at the back door when she needs to go out.

I hope that helps.
