Default can you train a dog to stay in the yard?

i dont have a fenced in yard, bc im not at a permanent residence yet.. my yorkie-poo loves to go outside but when he's outside he is extremely hard headed and never listens when we call him.. and if we go to get him he runs from us and then we end up half way down the road before we finally catch him.. he will stay in the yard a good bit, unless he hears people or see people outside.. our neighbors dont mind bringing him back (seeing how he runs wayyy faster than me) but im afraid he will get hit by a car or start chasing cars.. is there anything i could do to maybe change his behavior?

Default Getting Your dog to Stay in the Yard

Yes, you can train your dog to stay in the yard, but as a professional trainer I can tell you it takes work. First, you need to be the undispute pack leader in your dog's life. He needs to recognize you as the ultimate authority. Learn more about pack leadership and how to learn it by reading websites.

Also, start by attaching a long lead to your dog. Allow him to walk around the yard but when he approaches a point you are not comfortable with, give him a correction. You can do this by simply holding the leash, turning around and walking in the opposite direction. He will walk toward the boundary but get a correction by meeting the end of the leash. After several sessions he will learn that when he approaches a certain point, a correction comes. He will avoid those areas. But sure to use this technique in all areas of the yard.
