My dog is eliminating in the pen
I have a 6 month old Chihuahua/Mini Pincher mix puppy. I am trying to fully housetrain her since she was 2 month old (when I brought her home). She does not eliminate in her crate where she stays at nights and sometimes in the afternoon. She stopped since she was 4 month old. She does not even eliminate in the house, with a very few exceptions. But she does in her pen where I leave her during the hours I am at work (07:00 am to 03:00 pm). The pen is in a small room in the house. I use papers in one corner and she eliminates on them. I can not leave her in her crate for so many hours without water. It is summer now and the temperature is 30-32 °C (86-90 °F) in the house. During the afternoon she is free to roam in the house and the yard. Due to summer the house is open when we are home. The dog is free roaming the yard and the house (except bedrooms). She eliminates outside in the yard when free. I would appreciate your help to make her stop eliminating in the pen.

Your dog is doing well . You state that he goes outside when you are home and that you have had very few accidents in the house. Your dog is still a puppy and chances are won't hold it for that long. You work from 7:00 am -3:00 pm that's 8 hours that you work . I'm sure your dog is in the pen for more that that time as you don't leave at that time and return at those exact times do you?
I don't see the problem. Your dog is eliminating on the papers that you put in the corner....the dog is trained for both papers and outside. What a blessing! Is it a bowel movement you are talking about? If so, try puppy pads. They are great for containing urine, and there is much less odor than the papers. Yes, there is a cost factor...but the benefits of using them verses the papers outweigh the cost.
There are many different types. They are scented to attract the dog and I have been using them for years. They are GREAT! Some are also heavy scented. It might take a while ..you might have place the papers on top of the puppy pads initially so that the dog gets the idea but the dog will get it. They are smart! They want to go in the right place too!
I work crazy hours so my dog is not on a schedule. This is the best way to go. I don't worry if the dog has to go out and I can't make it on time. And I especially don't have to worry about leaving water and food for my baby which is always available. Unfortunately, nature takes it's course and just like us they too have to go. I don't want to stress the dog nor myself ....so for me this is the best way to go.

Thanks a lot jconstant for your response. The pads are not what I want. My working hours are fixed, thus I want a fully housebroken dog who eliminates outside.

If you have to leave her alone during the day, she needs fresh water and a place to eliminate. It's totally unrealistic to expect a small dog left in a pen all day to drink water and "hold it" until you get home. It's just not physically possible for her.
If you are determined to have her only eliminate outside, then she needs a way to get outside when you are at work...either a dog door and an enclosed area of the yard, or a dog sitter that comes by and lets her out while you are away.

Housetraining
Hello everyone...
When is it reasonable to expect my puppy to stop messing on the carpet?
"Christmas" is a lab/collie mix and is almost 5 months old... I have heard that if we clean the carpets to get rid of the smell, it might help. I ordered some odor removal from The Best Pet Stain-Remover Product There Is | Anti-Icky.com today.
