Leash training is about teaching your dog that it can never get where it wants to go by pulling on the leash (NEVER!) If you allow the dog to succeed even a fraction of the time, it will only strengthen it's resolve to try harder the next time.

If your dog reaches the end of the leash and starts pulling, don't pull straight back, apply gentle pressure to the side of the dog's neck (pulling it off balance and preventing it from pulling). Wait for the dog to come towards you, at which point you show your dog you approve and start walking again.

Yes, you will probably feel totally ridiculous, but don't worry about what the neighbours think.

My dog training mentor always says to never walk your dog with a destination in mind. Walking your dog is NOT going to provide cardio exercise for your dog unless you are going like stink for a very long time. Walking your dog (especially puppy) is about providing an opportunity to potty and providing visual and possibly social stimulation and to teach it good leash manners.

SO, with that in mind. If you don't manage to get past the end of your driveway, on your 20 minute walk, so be it. Your dog will still have gotten 20 minutes of fresh air and exercise (even if it was in circles). Be consistent and things will eventually get better.

As for all the fancy leashes, halties and harnesses. If you don't want to make the effort to train your dog, by all means buy a head halter and lead your dog around by the nose. Sure, these gadgets work to prevent pulling, but you won't have taught your dog anything. (halties also drive a lot of dogs crazy, especially sight hounds and herding dogs)

On the other hand, if you want a dog that will walk properly at all times, I recommend a plain old flat collar, lots of patience and consistence, consistence, consistence.

Good luck. Your efforts will be paid back in spades over the lifetime of your dog.
