Default Martingale collars

This isnt a training question per say, but I thought this would be the best place for this question.
I have a greyhound who was underweight when I got him, and his regular collar fit him just fine. His neck was skinny enough that it fit loose even at the base of neck without being able to slip over his head. Since then hes put on some weight and I'm not comfortable with how the collar fits around the base of his neck to keep it from easily sliding over his head. My question is this...is a Martengale collar safe to leave on him 24/7? I've always viewed them the same as a slip collar, not to be left on unless being walked or trained.
Thanks
