Question Puppy anti-potty train

I am a desperate mommy of a four month old Brussells Girffon named Zoey

I got Zoey from another family that couldn't take care of her. Their version of potty training is to let her outside for hours.

I am crate traning Zoey. But she is having issues with pottying outside. I take her on walks & outside but she will not go. Almost within five mins of being inside she eliminates. Right away I take her back outside and she does nothing else. This has been going on for months.

Zoey also likes to eliminate in her crate. I've tried smaller crates & she does the same thing.

I have also tried puppy pads but she shreads those to pieces.

I don't know what else to do with her. The instructors at PetsMart say that I'm doing everything right. I take her out several times a day & take her for walks. I take her outside the second she starts to eliminate in my house to no avail.

Please help I am desperate

The only thing I can think of besides what your already doing would be to take her to where you want her to go outside and stay there with her untill she goes. Once she finally goes praise her and take her back inside. Depending on how stubborn she may be, you may have to stand out there with her for awhile. She should eventually get the idea that that is where she is supposed to go. I'm sure others will have suggestions for you as well.

Yes I've been doing that also... we stood outside in 30 degree weather for two hours... I got so cold I had to come back in. 5 mins later she eliminated in the house.

What do you do whe nyou catch her going in the house besides taking her right out? Do you ignor her, correct her? Here is something you can try. When she goes in the house, correct the potty accident! I know it sounds crazy but it is said to work REALLY well. When she goes on the floor don't look at her, look at the spot and in a stern voice say "BAD POTTY" to the accident, make sure she sees you then take her outside and when she goes outside praise, priase, praise and say good potty! I have not had a puppy in a couple years so I have not yet been able to try this out but I have heard to works wonders!! Good Luck!

Should I try Bad Potty with the crate also?

The ONLY time you can "correct" is when you catch her in the act. If you do not see it happen just clean it and move on. I suggest attaching your pup to your belt with a leash so that you can watch her 100% of the time!

Yeah, when we got our puppy five years ago, we had some trouble at first. We finally realized we were being too gentle when she pottied in house, and so she just didn't understand that it wasn't acceptable. Finally, one day my husband tried acting visibly upset and using a very stern voice, even shouting slightly, saying, "No! No potty in house!" Then he rushed her outside and said, in a regular voice, "Potty outside." It was then that she successfully pottied outside for the first time. When she did, he got really excited, raising his voice into an excited "talking to a baby" pitch, saying, "Good girl! Good potty! Good outside potty!" After that, she got it. She just had some more accidents the day after her spay surgery (understandable), and that's it! She's five years old now, and never potties in the house anymore.

Are you more concerned about peeing or pooping (or both).

Here are a few tricks that may help to stimulate your puppy to go. No harm in trying.

For peeing ... try wiping her bottom with a warm damp cloth (to stimulate her to go ... mother dogs will lick a puppy's bum to make it go).

For pooping ... this worked with my little shih tzu puppy. Gently, but firmly squeeze the tummy starting just below the ribs and slowly working lower and lower. (kind of like squeezing a tube of toothpaste) If your dog is not overly fat, you will actually be able to feel if there is stool in the intestines.

No joke, this worked. I didn't do it all the time, but if I felt like she should have to go, but was just farting around (ha!) and I was tired of getting rained or or freezing, I would do this. If she had any poop in there that was ready to come out, she would go very soon after. (this is not hocus pocus, you can also do a similar type of massage on yourself - following the path of the large intestine)

You really just want to get her to go a few times outside so you can reward her for going in the proper place.

As already suggested, since she is also soiling in her crate, leashing her to you at all times in the house is probably your best bet. Dogs tend to have some kind of a ritual that indicates that they're thinking about going potty (sniffing, spinning around, walking with stiff legs). When you spot the signs, quickly but calmly whisk her outside.

Good luck. I feel your pain. Now if I can just get this little shih tzu pup to ASK to go outside. (she can hold it for a very long time, but if I don't remember to take her out, she will eventually have an accident).
