First time dog owner. Help with my beagle
Today i brought home a 1 year old male purebred beagle that i got at the local shelter, they said that he was a stray. Being a first time dog owner i have a few questions. I didnt really expect him to be house broken, however i did expect him to be used to going outside. He has been in his new home for about 3 hours now and he has already went in the house twice. I am having a hard time telling when he needs to go, he has pretty much been sniffing the ground the whole time he has been here. How often should i take him out? Also when i goes in the house, i shout "no" then put his leash on and take him straight outside. Is there anything else i should be doing? Also walking him on a leash, somtimes he will just stop and wont move, until i jerk on the leash. What should i do about this? Im sure that his demeanor will change when he gets used to his surroundings. Any help will be apreaciated. Thanks

First, read more information about beagles and their temperament/behaviors. Next is have some place for him inside, where he can feel he's own. Please be gentle with him, talk to him smoothly and give him treats, also socializing him with other dogs and people who owns dog. He will eventually feel comfortable around and able to listen to you, just always be patient on training him.

This is all normal for a new Dog. He will be sniffing around to get the feel of his new home. He may be peeing to mark his territory. He will settle down fairly quickly.
Don't get too cross or angry as this will make it longer for him to settle in.
I would take him out numerous time a day. As many as you can and praise him when he makes his mark outside and not in.
As for walking on the lead. We had a similar problem with our rescue dog. She would just stop and not move. The solution that worked best was to go Zen. Just chill out and be calm. Just stand there calmly when the dog refuses to move. You will find that very quickly he will start moving again on his own. This worked so well for us. In a few days the problem was solved. A very calm approach and a bit of patience really can work wonders. It also keeps the stress levels down when trying to train a new dog.
Hope this helps.

I see your post is a couple of weeks old, so I suspect some of this has settled down a bit. But if you're still having problems with him eliminating in the house, keep this in mind.
Dogs usually have to eliminate when they first get up in the morning, and when they awaken from a nap. They also will need to go after they eat. If you take him out at regular times every day, his body will adjust and he'll be ready to eliminate at those times.
Do take him out for potty breaks. Don't just put him out. Pick a word or phrase, like "Go potty", and tell him what you want him to do. When you see him getting ready to do his business, repeat the phrase a couple of times, then praise him when he does it. This will help him associate the phrase with the deed.
If you're telling him "Go potty" when you take him out, you can also ask him "Do you need to go potty?" when he's inside. The take him out and tell him what you want him to do. In a very short time he'll react in a positive manner when you ask him if he has to go, which will get the ball rolling, as it were, so he'll be primed to go once he's outside.
I also agree that you should just wait him out when he stops and refuses to move. Walk to the end of the leash, and just stand there. When he does move toward you, praise him and start walking.
