Default we just rescued a two year old hound with no prevoius training, where should I start!

We just rescued Daisey from a local animal shelter, she is a 2 year old blue tick hound. She is calm and quiet, but has no basic training what soever. I am pretty sure she was part of a group of hunting dogs that didnt get much human love. So I want to get her to comprehend here name first, and of course sit; so that we can start working toward bigger and better things.

The initial struggle is the name. even if I cheerfully call for her with a treat she seams less than thrilled. Toys are very foriegn to her, she isnt scared but also not interested. So what should I do to positivly reinforce to teach the name?? At this time I am just saying the name, daisey, alot in a happy voice while petting etc. And not using then name during anything unpleasant (off the couch!)

I have read alot over the last year and understand the asserting dominance aspects of training, so I am fearfull to be over affectionate and her take us as pushovers either?

This is our first dog and we are commited to training properly so that we all can enjoy each others company. Any advice would really help!!

Thanks John.

Sign her up for a basic obedience class ASAP. Make sure you meet the trainer, observe a class, talk to past clients and get references (there are some evil trainers out there). I have no idea where you live and only know of trainers in my state (MA) which I am happy to list for anybody interested. Good Luck with the new girl

Some GREAT books that will help you to show her you are in-control but without the use of any force or violence are: "The ABC's of Positive Training" By Miriam Fields-Babineau, "Leader of the Pack" By Nancy Baer and Steve Duno, "Be The Dog" By Steve Duno, "The Dog Whisperer" & "The Puppy Whisperer" by Paul Owens and Norma Eckroate as well as anything by Victoria Stilwell. While it is VERY important for your dog to respect you, don't get sucked into the thinking that you cannot love or be nice to your dog. I once overheard a trainer telling somebody "Don't be nice to him or he won't respect you" ... that is furthest from the truth. Dog's are more responsive and more likely to listen to a calm and kind leader NOT one who uses intimidation to get his point across.
