Should I punish my dog?
Hello, I'm making this post for 1 reason. We used to punish our dog for peeing on the carpet or tile (the usual "Bad dog! No!" and take him outside), but now we asked a professional dog trainer, and she said NOT to punish him in any way. She said it was our fault and not his. However, since we have been listening to her advice, the peeing/pooping on the floor has only gotten WORSE (a.k.a. it isn't working):?. So I ask you, should I punish him when he goes to the bathroom on the floor, or will not punishing him help over time? Thank you.:|

can you tell me more about your dog: age, breed, how long have you had him? House training accidents are usually the owners fault But can also be related to health. Have you had your dog tested for a UTI? What method are you using for house training (crate, no crate, potty pads, litter box, etc.). Once I have more details I can help you better.

Training a dog takes a lot of patience. One thing about them is that you must be consistent. However, do not punish your dog for peeing on the carpet. Let him know that you do not approve of it but do not scold or yell at him.

IF you catch the dog in the act of course you give a loud firm NO! and take the dog outside-
as long as you are not hitting the dog or pushing his face in it like so many do of course you have to be firm and consistant

You SHOULD punish your dog if you catch him while he's peeing. If you don't do it right then and there its no use however. Correcting dog problems requires action in the moment it happens so the dog can associate the punishment with the action...practice makes perfect!

When we got our Husky as an 8 week old pup i started to take her into to the garden straight away, i took her out about once an hour and everytime she went to the loo i would go over the top with praise, giving a small training treat now and again. Within 5 days she was asking to go out when she needed to go. I think the key was how often i was taking her out, she soon got the idea. I also took her out of the same door everytime. She has only had gone to toilet once since indoors but that was due to her being poorly.
