Unhappy Help with my pom

Hello everyone

I am having problems with my pom Wendy. She was a year old March 1st and about 8-10lbs. We also have a two year old collie named Ginger. Now I had no problem training the collie, but Wendy is about to drive me crazy! She know her commands but chooses to ignore everything. I could live with most of it BUT she runs out,or tries to, everytime we open the door. That in its self would be ok IF she would stay in my yard but know she runs all over the neighborhood and I am so afraid she is going to be hit by a car. I do go chase her but while chasing her she runs in the road. I have tried walks a couple times a day but to no avail. My yard is not fenced yet(it will be soon),but both of my dogs are mostly inside dogs so a fence will hopefully help some but there is still the question of her running out the front door when my Daughter goes out to play. What can I do short of getting a shock collar(which I really don't want to do but if it keeps her from getting hit by a car do I really have another choice?) Please help! If I could get her trained to stay in the yard I won't be cleaning up pee and poo anymore but that is really second to keeping her safe. Thanks so much for at least reading.

you need set her some boundaries. If you are able , keep her lightly leashed next to you. You will prevent her from getting out that door if someone comes through without your knowledge(say your in another room or doing chores)

depending on age of you daughter, have her tell you when she is going out; then have wendy sit and wait then have your daughter go out.

I have my daughter knock before coming in so I can have timber sit and wait position and then she enters and no dogs going out the door. he knows his boundaries now and he stays clear of the door and all I do is tell him to wait/ stay. I have only had him 5 weeks this sunday. My chihuahua does the same. she sits and waits while people come in and out. she is not a runner like Timber.

remember to reward her for waiting. it will be easier.

keep us posted. I am sure others on here will give better advice. but this is what I do and never failed me yet.

Thanks for the sdvice I have thought about leashing her to me but I worry that she won't get enough to drink during the day. I will start working on the sit ans stay while people come in and out that would be great for both my dogs. Ginger is a BIG collie and she wants to smell everyone right as they step in the door, but she does go lay when we tell her to so that has never been a problem. It would be a lot less chaotic though, whats good for one should be good for the other, right? Well I'll give it a try this week, looks like my daughter and husband are going tobe doing alot of coming in and out, and while I am at it I can work on wendy's barking when someone knocks. Two in one YAY! I'll keep everyone posted I'm off to buy some pretzals and peanut butter.
