Default my dog has started ignoring me

I honestly thought he was going deaf but he hears everyone else but just completely ignores me when we r out. he is a 7year old collie annd he is lovely but when we go a walk i have to keep him near incase of other dogs so when he starts to wonder of i call him i use my voice to be more harsh and louder and u would think he was deaf but if i have a friend with me they have to just speak and he pays attention ????

Is this a new behavior or something he has always done? First off I would pay a trip to your vet to make sure there is no health issue going on. This is always the first step when a dogs behavior changes. Honestly it sound like you need to hire a trainer to work with you and your dog. A harsh, loud voice can be frightening so it is possible he is affraid to come to you. Your best bet it to work with a trainer who can help with the relationship between you and your dog.

As my border collie has gotten older, she has developed what I call, "selective hearing." In other words, she responds when she feels like it and "doesn't hear me" when something more important grabs her attention. Could this be what is going on with your dog?

Just curious - how do you react if/when he does come when you call? If you are frustrated or angry, he may learn not to come when you call, cuz it's no fun when he does! Maybe, if this is the case, you could practice calling him and rewarding him - first maybe with a fav treat, then just with alot of praise...

Let me know if this works, or if you need any more suggestions!

The dog has not developed anything new. The dog is a herding type, they are dominant and will become the master if "you" the owner have not established that early in the dogs life.

If the dog recently started with this behavior, and the dog does not listen to you it could be a number of things.

Though the dog is old, is he neutered?

The fact the dog listens to your friend means your dog looks at you as less dominant than your friend. Just because you speak in a stronger tone does not really mean anything. The energy your friend has is stronger than yours and is visible by him able to get the dogs attention with just calling him.

Dogs have a pack instinct and from time to time they try to establish their status anew. Each one of them tries from time to time to become a leader or change his status within the hierarchy. This may be the case. They may also forget their training and have to be retrained. I would seek the help of a professional trainer or buy a training course and train the dog myself (which may be cheaper). You can train a dog at any age so it's possible to retrain you dog even though he's seven years old.
