Talking Adopted a dog from the Humane Society

Hi!

I found this site trying to find tips on how to train dogs. I need help!

We adopted a poodle cross from the Humane Society, he's between 1-2 yrs old and we had him neutered. He's very loveable & adorable but hates to be alone. He chews everything...even the legs of my coffee table!

But what we really can't get him to do is go outside to potty. He comes in from outside and jumps on our beds to pee. Mostly my 11 yr old daughters bed is used the most. We have to keep the doors closed to all rooms that are not being used. He doesn't mess during the night that he spends in our daughters room, only when he first comes in from outside. We're confused.

The only history we have of him is he was very matted & dirty when he arrived at the shelter, they named him Pig Pen. That's all we know. He HATES to go outside but likes to go for walks. We think he may have been left outside and that's why he was so matted and maybe that's why he hates to go out. When he wakes up in the morning he runs around the house and it takes two of us to catch him to put him out!

We've done the treats before & after he goes out. Try not to keep him out very long. Praise the heck out of him when we do see him potty outside. Last night he came in from being out 1/2 hour and he jumped up on the couch & peed!

We got him in June. our 11 yr old daughter and myself are home during the summer...I cook at her school so I have the same breaks she does. I leave at 6:50 in the morning and am home at 2:00 now that school has started. My husband drops my daughter off at school at 7:45 and sh'e home at 3:15. My husband comes home for lunch at 12:15-12:45.

We also have an American Eskimo who is 16 yrs old. We got her when she was 3yrs old and trained.

Help!!

Thank you!

Congrats on your new addition. Thank you for saving a life! Shelter dogs are sometimes scared that you will leave them. I hope he adjusts really soon. We got a shelter dog a week ago and we take her everywhere we can that way she she doesn't feel so left out and she doesn't flip out if we don't take her with us.
