Default How do I get my dog to respect me?

Okay, I have this labrador and he's about a year old.
My dad and him are buddies, but when my dad is around the dog does as he's told and doesn't break the rules.

How do I get the same respect from this dog that he shows my father?
Like when my dad isn't home, my dog thinks he can do whatever he wants.

I've been getting to be really mean to him, and I don't want to be like that.

However, when I go tell him to stop, he stops. Then as soon as I turn my back, he's back at his antics, and I have to stop doing whatever I'm doing to try to get him to stop.

Unfortunately my dad won't be home awhile, so someone has to get this dog to stop being unruly and i'm not sure how?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It's all about dominance, you have to be the alpha male, or at least show your dog that you are 'above' him in rank. He certainly seems to be viewing you as an equal or even lower on the totem pole than he is. Establish your dominance by training your dog to be subservient. Give him commands and make sure he listens. Offer rewards when he preforms properly and scoldings when he doesn't. With proper training and attention you'll gain the respect of your dog.

Default training and repeating

I am by no means an expert but this is my experience:

I had to leave my dog with my mother for 6 months and i found that when i got her back she did not listen as well as before.

I am now noticing great improvment by controlling her every move and retraining even the simplest commands and teaching her some new tricks wich my dog enjoys alot.

Make sure that when you feed him you make him sit and wait, if he goes for the bowl without your command simply remove it and ignore him and do it until he can wait for your command to eat,

He will respect you more if you control things of value to him like food toys favorate space etc

Dont let him sit on you and dont let him go before you through doors and try not let him walk ahead of you , or atleast keep him by your legs, when you take him out.

i also found that it works when entering the room with my dog to ignore her for a bit and when she settles and is calm i give affection.

make sure you start the interactions and end them and not the other way around.

I dont really know whats his antics are about but you could try with having treats or his favorate toys and rewarding him when he is being good eventually hell wanna be good b/c then he gets treats or toys. this will also make him more focused on you and what you want him to do.

also a powerfull bodylanguage and calm but consistent tone of voice add to the effect. If he does not do what you want him to taking a step into his space usually works for me.

this is all i can think of at the moment

good luck!

I guess you need to be more firm when issuing a command. When he obey your command give him a treat, that way he will be familiar to the command and that there is a treat for him in exchange of obeying. you need not be mean on dog.
