My puppy doesn't want to walk
Hi, ok so we just rescued a dog a month ago. She is 5mo old. Very sweet, very smart we got to teach her sit, stay, lay down, drop it,paw, high5. But walking! We live downtown Detroit so there is a lots of distraction outside. She now walks fine at night sometimes she stops but with a little nudge she walks again. But she doesn't want to walk when its a daylight out. I seriously have to pull her so she moves. I use a harness. I tried everything treats, and so on but she doesn't move she just moves when I say ok lets go home.
Please help.

Sounds like your pup missed out on some socialization. She walks alright in the evening - when I would imagine it's quieter and there are less distractions. Are there some quieter streets in your neighbourhood that you could try walking with her and gradually build up to the busier streets? A nearby park would be great if there is one around you.
If neither of these options is available, the only thing I can suggest is to keep doing what you're doing with an enormous helping of patience. Eventually, she'll get used to all the hustle and bustle of downtown life. It will however, take some time. You could try using some cooked chicken or steak for treats to entice her along. I've always found that I got more cooperation with a piece of meat than I ever did with a dog cookie. Good luck!

What sort of dog do you have? If it's small enough to carry, perhaps you should begin carrying it around during daytime to get it accustom to the sights and sounds of the city. If it's a larger size dog find a secluded park or area where there are less distractions. Your dog is young and getting comfortable with the surroundings takes time.

Thank you
She is a Stafford bull terrier mixed w Chihuahua She is pretty small I guess I could carry her around. But today I took her out and she walk for little which was a huge step. Plus she just gets so excited when she sees a person or a dog, I don't let her jump on people but sometimes they just come to her so she think its ok bc she gets rewarded for jumping on them.
Thank you and there is a park I always take her at night I will try to take her through out the day.
Again thank you

I hope nobody minds but I just noticed this and I have to reply. Unless a dog is ill or injured they should NEVER be carried anywhere. One sure way to mess up a dog is to get into the habit of carrying it. Even with a young pup, once a pup is old enough to leave its mum then.. Handle yes...carry no !!! If a dog is unsure or afraid in a situation then carrying will increase or encourage the fear. If anyone disagrees with me on this please let me know, as I understand learning about dogs is a lifelong challenge. Thank you.

Have you ever thought of what has happend to her before you rescued her?
Do you know if she knows day light?
Maybe it has to do with the light during the day what she dind't know because she was hold in a dark hovel or in the cellar or whereelse where no daylight came fom outside into the room.

I have a 5 month old pup too....but it sounds like your dog isn't use to the distractions of the city....my dog walks with me fine until he sees another dog...but i'm sure if you get your puppy use to his surroundings then he'll have no problem walking
