Cool Barking & punishment

Helloooo everyone, i have two very cute (naughty lol) puppy bothers, had them over a week and they have got the potty training sussed (clever boys) with the help of treats - the odd accident but it is to be expected - Alfie the cute fluffy one is a yaper tho, soon as he sees you or even just runnung down stairs bless, it is cute but not sure next door will be thinkin the same - so how do i stop him or teach him to keep his little mouth shut? any suggestions?

Also I knw I should never hit or shout at my dog, although i do raise my voice a little when i say no, not sure its getting through tho, how do i go about punishing them when they have been bad?

Thanks in advance x

Saying "No" in a high squeaky voice, or a soft kind voice is praise to a dog. If you don't raise your voice while saying "No" you had might as well say "Good dog". Seeing as you know when he's about to bark, why not command silence before he actually does bark? Try saying "Quiet" in a loud-ish but not scolding voice before he barks, or mid-bark. He'll more than likely stay quiet and be wondering what you just said. 2-4 seconds after you command silence, call him to you and feed him a treat while repeating the word "Quiet, good boy!" in your 'you're a good dog' voice.

It'll take some time, but it's guaranteed to work. I'm sure you'll get many more answers and suggestions. Hope mine comes in handy. Good luck.

When my dogs hear something outside my apartment door and go running, barking at the top of their lungs, I tell them, "Thank you. Mommy will go see." I go and look out the peephole and tell them that everything is ok. Once I've acknowledged their concerns, they quiet right down.

Avoid using punishment/yelling especially while barking. When the dog is barking and you are yelling, how does the dog know that youre just not barking with him!? Dont raise your voice with barking, I taught my dog to "Speak" and "SSHHHH" on command.
Its actually simple to do:
When your dog barks give him a treat, wait til the next bark and treat. Soon he will eat his treat and bark again waiting for another. Thats when you can start giving him the "Speak" command.

For "SSSHHHH"
When your teaching the "Speak" and he barks w/out the command you dont reward. Make the SHHHH sound and he will look at you awkward, Then you reward his silence, then reward for staying quiet and reward again.
Repeat this proccess multiple times until he is responsive.

Now this may not keep hime quiet all the time but it will teach him to be quiet when you ask of it.

Good Luck

I don't yell in my dog if hes's barking and I think it's a perfect idea.

when traing a dog simple manners remember what a pack leader would do in the wild.
using you finger tips or palm of your hand as an extension of your self is a simple way to do corrections.
you seem to know when he/she is about to bark. so within seconds of the first bark use the tips of your hand like a wild dog would his mouth.. not a hit, but a meaningful tap on his/her neck or shoulder. with a loud shush. but dont walk away. hold till he/she submits to you. (eg sitting down laying down or a lazy tail) if you walk away to early you not proving your point.
dont use words' yet, dogs dont understand english.
i trained my three month old puppy this way, she never barks. and always stays 5 feet away from the door when it ring or knocks. she shows interest with out noise or unwanted excitement.

I don't think "punishment" should be a part of your life as a dog owner. You want your commands to be obeyed, you need respect from your dog, but "punishing" is different from discipline. If my dog does not obey me - for instance if she refuses to get down from a chair when I tell her to - I lift her down and put her on the floor. There is a big difference between enforcing your will (which is necessary for your dog's safety!) and punishment. There are times when a time out (for minutes - no more than 5 minutes) is necessary for you and the dog to have a bit of space but nothing more.

We live in a highly populated pet area and constantly have ppl walking their dogs up and down the sidewalk in front of our house. Gracie, depending on her mood will jump up and bark viciously pacing throughout the house. it drives me crazy. I usually say in a loud voice "Gracie!" and she tries to contain herself. Barking is a real problem with her... I guess i don't help matters by having "her recliner" right next to the large picture window facing the activity.... :???: I do like her to be able to enjoy watching outdoors, but her barking can be annoying.

I tried this with my dog trigger, 9 week old blood hound. He screams and gets aggressive. Should i keep up at this or change to something else? He barks whenever i don't show him attention. Today i locked him in his crate when he was aggressive toward my boyfriend. He barked for almost 10 min. then i praised him when i let him out.

Never put a dog in their crate as a means of punishment. You do not want to associate the crate with negative behavior or he will soon see the crate as something bad and will not want to go in it anymore. He also may feel he did something wrong when he is put there otherwise and this can be confusing. Just never use the crate as a means of punishment or a time out. I understand the logic though, for it's like sending a kid to their room, but remember that these are dogs and their only means of communication with us is body language and situationary circumstances.
