Untrained Year Old Beagle
We were given a year old female Beagle a week ago and love the little lady. Here lies the problems, her previous owner raised hunting dogs. We do not hunt and want to keep Missy as a house pet. She is very skittish, but is leash broken to a degree. She is scared of the crate but we are making progress there, I hope. We are making some progress with potty training her but have a way to go yet.
We researched about dog food and have chosen Canidae All Life Stage to feed her. She does not want to eat this food at all, or any dog food. I may have made a mistake as I cooked her an egg with a hot dog as she wouldn't eat any type of dog food. She will not eat dog treats, cookies or anything like that. All she will eat is eggs, hot dogs and bologna. How can we make her eat the Canidae, it is just to expensive to us to discard as we bought 20 pounds which I know wasn't a wise thing to do. We just knew she would love this food. Any help will be appreciated.

She may not be a big food lover. There was a thread last week about a dog that wouldn't eat and I'm sure that someone who knows their way around the forum better than I do will post a link to it but for what it's worth - a healthy dog will not starve. You have to be more stubborn than her. If you want to tempt her to eat the kibble you could try mixing the egg in with her food and gradually add more food and less egg or you could put a tiny amount of raw frozen mince (ground meat? - sorry I'm British :lol in the bottom of her bowl with the kibble on top. That way she can smell it but can't get at it without eating the kibble too.
But it would be just as easy to put the food in the bowl and leave it down for 15/20 mins then pick it up again. No fuss, no treats, nothing extra at all.
I'd put the food down two or three times a day and take it way again. Just don't give in.

Glad Barb posted the link. I, as well as others, gave advice for the eating issue there. As far as your other issues...
Her being skiddish is something that is going to hopefully ease away with time. You need to socialize her with other dogs and humans and she should adjust to her new lifestyle. Plenty of positive attention, treats, patience, and love.
If you need any more help adjusting the dog to the crate here is a thread from the past...
Help! My puppy hate his crate so much!!
What are more details on the potty training issue. What is the method are you using, Please give us more detail on the progress of the potty training so we can help you adjust your style of training for more success. Go through your entire schedual with the dog.
Good luck with the pup!
