Default Potty training an older dog? And a few other things.

We adopedt a 4-5 yo Border Collie 3 weeks ago. TJ has been great, we had a problem with him marking in the house when he first came home and we have been able to stop that, he was neutered a month ago so he still has some hormones going on there.

He is mostly potty trained, and he can go days without doing anything in the house. Our walking schedule is very regular. I take him out when I wake up at 5:30 am, he goes out again before we leave for work and the kids head off to school. When he is in his crate he can go all day without peeing, yesterday I left him out of the crate all day, the longest he has ever gone, he did great, no messes in the house, etc. When we walk him and he does his business outside we praise him.

Because of the marking we have him wearing a belly band, last night he completely soaked the belly band At night he has full run of the house and during parts of the night sleeps in bed with us. Most nights he will stay dry all night.

The only place he seems to always stay dry is when he is in his crate. I was wondering if at night we should put him in his crate so he stays dry and learns to sleep at night. When he first came home he was a night owl. We are definitely not.

If we should put him in his crate at night should we put it in our bedroom or leave it in the livingroom where it has been.

We do have another dog, Rubi, she is always has full access to the house and sleeps in bed with us, she was adopted from a shelter too but she truly spoiled us, from the day she came home she never went potty in the house and slept all night long and then some and has never touched anything in the house.

I would suggest he be crated in the living room where the crate currently is at night. He needs to be taught a routine and this is the best way at this point.
So long as the other dog is with you at night, there should be little to distract him from sleeping.

Thank you. We did crate him at night for 2 nights and that did the trick. I really planned on doing it for a week but my husband didn't put him in the crate on the 3rd night and I was already asleep. He stayed dry that night and every night since.
