Default Husky/Hound jumping & climbing fences!!

About 6 wks. ago we rescued a 3-1/2 husky/hound mix. We have a nice off leash park nearby and have been taking him there daily for the last few weeks. I also take him for a brisk 15-20 min. walk every morning and he's learning to walk OK on a leash. Our dog seemed to be adjusting well to the park until a few days ago when he found a way to jump the fence and then ran out to scamper around and explore the neighbourhood. Ever since then our visits to this park have become increasingly challenging as he eventually tries to either jump the fence or climb over it. I'm beginning to think it was a huge mistake to ever take him there as he is part husky (Siberian I think) and probably can't be trusted off leash. I talked briefly with a well respected trainer in my area and he thinks he may be able to help. When I asked about Invisible Fencing for our partially fenced yard he thought it was probably a good idea. I'm not sure what to do....advice anyone?

I have no clue what to do about him climbing the fence, but it might be a wise idea to tie him out for a while until you can come up with a solution that works. I'd really hate to see him get hit on the road.

Lunar is right...I had a Husky who jumped the fence every chance she got, especially at 7am on Sundays...I finally go a 40ft which gave her plenty of lead to run on..Huskies are born to run so that's exactly what they do..

As for an invisible fence don't get your hope up...Breeds like the Husky are willing to suck up the shock just to get out of the yard and run...I think a tie out would be your best solution.

Good Luck!

An invisible fence will NOT work for a Husky mix. I volunteer at a shelter in my area and i cant tell u how many huskys we get bc ppl dont realize that huskys just run... its what they were breed to do. If u are only doing a couple 20 min walks a day that probably isnt enough exercise for these guys. Many ppl with breeds like Huskys invest in a treadmill and have there dog run on that along with several daily walks.

I would always keep ur husky mix tied up or leashed.

Huskys are a lot of work but once u get a routine down, they are extremely loving. We have several Huskys where i take my dog to do agility. Doing these types of thing with ur dog will also make the bond between the two of u stronger. Good Luck!

Thanks for all the advice everyone! I just got a 40 ft. lead and will use that for a while until I decide what to do next. The treadmill also sounds like a good idea too... was thinking of getting one for myself someday so if I go that route it will certainly get a lot of use LOL.
