Default Training questions

Me and my friend were at the dog park the other day. There was a medium size dog there that was picking on a lot of dogs and trying to wrestle. Well, he latched onto the throat of another dog and stopped its breathing intermittently. However, also there was the head trainer for the OKCPD K-9 unit. He had a german shepherd with him. He told the dog, "Cujo," to "pin him." Thats exactly what this sherherd did. he knocked the bully dog over and pinned him.

The OKCPD trainer then talked to the owner and made the two of them leave. Cujo let the bully up, on command, and then the owner set "Walk 'em." Cujo escorted the dog and owner to the gate and waited for the gate to lock and be called back. It was one of the coolest things I've seen.

How would a person train a dog like this? I'm not irresponsible enough to try it myself, its more of an academic curiosity.

I don't think training your dog is irresponsible in any way. The quickest way to find out how to train a dog to do something is look it up on the net. And there are several different ways to teach your dog the same thing. I bet that would be really neat to see what you did at the dog park. I think the neatest thing I have ever saw was when the Indianapolis Police department brought their crew to Ohio for a demonstration. The demonstration of them on their motorcycles was really cool, but their demonstration of them and their K9 unit was a sight to behold.

Also check out if there are any volunteer k-9 units in ur area. My dog and i just recently started with a volunteer k-9 unit in our area and it has been a lot of fun and very interesting. Im not going to lie it takes A LOT of work. The application process is long and it includes a background check. But so worth it!! It will help if u have done some obedience classes and even agility or something. My dog and i have been doing agility for about 5 months and one of the commands she knows is "focus" and when i say that she knows she needs to be looking at me and listening. This command is VERY helpful with our k-9 training. Good luck!!
