Training a sight impaired older dog....
I've recently adopted a 6.5 pb Blue Weim and she's got a story. I adopted her from a shelter where she came in as a stray - come to find out she had a micro-chip, but it was to the friend of the owner who adopted helped her out when the owner moved to Costa Rica. All we know is she had her eyes tested and it came back normal, but she's def not normal. She's not completely blind, but def impaired in some way. She's very skittish, shy, reserved and not a normal weim - she would rather be in her kennel than out with the family. I'm starting to work on training with her, but don't really know where to start since (a) I've never had a sight impaired dog and (b) she doesn't focus on me like my dog did during training... We think she either sees shadows or has a depth perception issue.
It appears she's never had training other than learning her name. She will perk up when you call her, but won't come or anything. She runs the opposite direction when I bring the leash out to take her potty, so I'm thinking there is an insecurity somewhere along with the sight issues. If anyone has any information to help me get Ms. Maggie Mae on her way to training and anything that will help build her confidence, I would greatly appreciate the input!
Thanks everyone! :-)
