Default What happens with retired bomb detection dogs?

I wonder what happens with retired bomb detection dogs? They are adopted by their partners, or anyone can adopt one? They are very smart so I would live having one around my house for my family's protection.

I'm not sure about bomb detection dogs but I know with MWD's (Military Working Dogs) after they are retired they get adopted out, not sure if they go to shelters, rescues, or what. I googled "where to adopt retired police dogs" and a few sites came up but I can't post them here yet lol, hope this helps!

The handlers usually have a choice to keep the dogs when they retire. As for anyone adopting them, No. They don't just adopt them out to any joe blow. They don't go to shelters or rescues. My husband is on the Canine Unit here in Ontario(canada) we have kept the dogs when they retired. They are part of the family. And the handler have a deep bond with the dogs.

Many of the bomb sniffing dogs are actually adopted from shelters.
