Help with new dog
I've had dogs for all 42 years of my life, so you would think I would know how to train my dogs. I have four dogs (mini schnauzer (9), schnoodle (8), yorkie (3) and an unknown mix (9 mo.))
The unknown mix, Fran, (I'm thinking there is some cairn terrier, yorkie and chihuahua) is our latest addition, rescued from the shelter. She's incredibly sweet and seems to be fairly bright, but I'm having a potty training issue and hope someone here can give me some tips.
I have a doggie door and my three other dogs do great with it. I was able to teach Fran how to use it right away. The problem is she knows how and why she should come inside the house, but she doesn't have a clue why she should use it to go outside. Consequently, she makes in the house instead of outside.
I've been good about luring her outside regularly through the doggie door and have a 50% success rate of getting her to make outside, but how do I get it through her head that she's to make 100% outside? (I didn't have a big issue with the others, but they were also younger in age than Fran when I got them.) She seems to want to please and I want to make going outside pleasurable, but with a purpose.
Any tips?
