Smile My Greyhound won't sit or lie down on command

I have a 3 yr old retired greyhound, started the basic training, come, stay, wait, which he can just about do, but getting him to sit or lie down is a night mare, tried all possible ways of using a treat, dogs should naturally sit if treat is moved past their nose up he head, no, he moves back, tried putting my hand to stop him from reversing, not getting anywhere, I've had two other greyhounds before who were easy to train, this one is a little more of a challenge.
Any Ideas of what I should do?

Thanks

Don't know if it would help (I've never managed to train a dog to lie on command!) but what if you were to train him somewhere where he can't back up - so that he is backing on to a wall?

Deafdogsrule can probably give you some advice about clicker training - click and reward him when he is sitting.

I use lure positioning too.
This video might be perfect for your situation that you might not have tried.

If that doesn't work (but it probably will ) you can try clicker training or just train when the dog is already in the sit or down position.

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"
