Red face too smart for her own good

I recently aquired a 4 year old Border Collie, she has not been worked with too much, but she does know sit and lay down. Our only problem is she completely ignores us! she seems more attached to me she follows me etc and listens for the most part when its time to go to bed however when i try and work with her (we do clicker training) she only does the commands if she smells and sees food. As for her recall, its TERRIBLE! for instance, I went out this mroning and tried working with her but running around the backyard seemed more fun than listening to what I had to say. Of course I walked away. I know collies are domiant breeds, how would I establish this dominance when I didnt have her as a pup? I'd really love to take her to off leash beaches and parks but its frustrating yelling after a dog that ignores and only does her commands when she's 100% sure she will getfood. Ive tried fading out the treat but shes too smart lol

You don't say anything about her background - what do you know about the 4 years before you had her? Has she been abused or neglected or trained in any way?

How long have you had her? Perhaps she hasn't really had time to bond with you.

As you know, collies are incredibly clever. I think it would help if you make her work for everything she needs from you. There are many puzzle toys on the market - they are good for challenging an intelligent dog.

Before trying any training with her you need to tire her physically so long walks are essential.

I agree! I think you need to work on the bond and respect first. Make sure you're also setting rules in your home and having her work for food, toys, treats, attention. Allowing her off leash in public is like step 20. Just concentrate on what needs to be done now and worry about the later later.

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"
