Default crate training

PLEASE HELP!!! i have a 5months old beagle-
i bought a crate but its not working! she wees and poos in it.
we have started puppy classes-for many reasons- as when we go for a walk she will jump up, nip, not come back to you, jump on my sofa, take things and run away with them, she wont sit, stay, lie down the list is endless, i appreciate some of these things will come in time and she is still a puppy but she really doesnt seem to be learning! i bought a dog as i wanted a family pet and believe that when you get a dog its for life, but its really hard, my 16month daughter hates her as the dog wont leave her alone, licks her and jumps at her, if anyone has advice i would really appreciate it thanks

Hi. Yes, the puppy time are trying times. The key is to be consistent. Enforce house rules. Make your dog work for things. At 5 months, he should be testing you but he should also be listening too. You should learn more about puppy rearing as it sounds like you have multiple issues because you need to do groundwork with your pup, along with adding more training. These are 2 separate area's you need to invest more time in. The dog class is a good idea. You can also learn a lot about dog rearing in general through books too. Doing both will make a world of difference.

Some books I suggest;

Before and After Getting Your Puppy: The Positive Approach to Raising a Happy, Healthy, and Well-Behaved Dog Dr. Ian Dunbar

The Art of Raising a Puppy :Monks of New Skete

The Other End of the Leash: Why We Do What We Do Around Dogs:Patricia B. McConnell

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"

is this your first pup? i agree with the last post. it sound like alot of the essential groundwork has not been laid out. What have you put inside the crate with your animal for its naps? its basic animal instinct not to urinate or defecate where they sleep. if you put your dogs bed, toys, and perhaps a personal peice of clothing inside the crate the less chances of it going to the washroom in their personalized place. as your are being consistent with this method dont forget to also be consistent with the times you take your dog out to use the washroom. basic training requires consistency on both parts.
