Default Rescue shih-tzu keeps pooping in the house

I have a rescue shih-tzu that I don't know how old is. I take him outside ample times a day, and he pees outside, but when it comes to pooping, he goes in the corner.

I have me four year old Shihtzu bell trained, and am trying with the new one, but after months, it is not happening and the pooping inside the house is becoming a two day thing. I have had him for a couple months now, and he has pooped outside before and gotten lots of praise, and when he poops inside, he knows he does wrong as I bring him next to it, and yell at the poop and he slinks down.

I dont know what to do anymore.. Please help!

Shih-tzus are the toughest dog to house train. I would consider crate training your dog. It might help with accidents in the house.

Our first Shihtzu was so easy to train.. We tried to crate train the second one.. It was more of a hassle than it was worth...I am talking poop engrained in the fur and all over the cage/walls.

It sounds like you may have been using to large of a crate..The crate should be just big enough for the dog to sit, stand, turn around and lay down comfortably..You also need to be sure to have them on a feeding and pottying schedule as well as making sure you've taken the puppy to the bathroom before you put them in the crate for the night..Crate training is a very effective way to housebreak a dog when it's done properly.

Also you shouldn't yell at her when she has an accident in the house..Dogs aren't capable of generalizing so when you do that it tells her she's in trouble because she pooped, not because she pooped on the the floor..The result of that will be her trying to seek off into a corner that's out of site or just a refusal to use the bathroom whenever your around.

If you catch her in the act of going simply tell her "no",scoop her up and take her outside. That way she'll start to understand where it is you want her to go..However if you don't catch her in the act then correcting the mistake after the fact is pointless..You'll have to just clean it up and move on.

He is on a Potty and eating schedule. Just a heads up, he is not a puppy.. We think He is about two or three. We yell at the poop, not him ever.

As far as the crate, it was not too big....as he was covered in poop when we came home. He whisked it out of the cage too. I thought he would pick up quickly watching our older dog.... But it doesn't seem to be happening.

Last night, he went in the corner. I literally happened so fast, there wasn't time. It was like he pooped and ran. So ther was no scooping him up to go outside either. It is tough right now too as it is snowing and we have to leash him up to go. We just can't put him outside.

Any other suggestions?

Well his age isn't an issue..If he's not housebroken you have to start from the beigining..Secondly,yelling at the poop is serving no point other then to confuse him and since you're doing it with an angry voice he assumes since he did it he's the reason your mad thus going in the corner to do it...I do have a few questions for you..One did you get him from a shelter and two what dog food do you feed him and how often are you feeding him..Lastly what is his feeding and potty schedule like?

He is house broken to an extent....he has just been recently doing this. He eats I think natures best....

I got the yelling at poop from a couple of dog positive dog trainers, and that worked with my first, so that is why I hope it I will work with him. He understands that the poop is bad.....

We got hm from foster home, who had like sixteen other dogs... So I am wondering if someone always asked to go out for him....and he just never had to deal with it.

During the week, and most times on weekends he gets up with me at seven and gets fed ... Most time he does not eat. They both go out at least one, if not twice before I leave, then they go out before noon and then I get home at five thirty they go out, eat and then go out a couple times before bed. He eats when I get home too.

Hope that helps fill you in

Well first let me say that I to am a positive reinforcement trainer and that's the first I've ever heard of that technique and since dogs don't have the ability to generalize it's most likely the tone of your voice your dog is reacting to..You have to remember that the dog is the one wh made the poop so when you yell at it it's the same thing as yelling at him since he did it..He doesn't have the ability to understandit any other way..Hence, pooping in the corner..What I would suggest doing if you have the stomach for it is the next time he poops in the house pick up and take into the yard and put it in whatever spot he usually goes in..

I have another question for you...Does he go outside by himself or are you and/or the other dog out there as well?
