Default Digging his way to China!!

ops: I need some advice! My dog is a rather large dog. I just moved from living on a life style block to living in a residential area which may not be helping my situation. We go for runs morning and night, but during the day he has to be put on a run as we like to dig! Not only in the gardens but random patches in the lawn?!?! What do you do to stop digging He doesn't dig when he's tied up but I would prefer if I didn't have to tie him up all day. He has toys to play with. Any other suggestions?! This is becoming hard work owning a dog and he is normally a pleasure!!

Just in case any of you have to deal with this I thought I'd post my findings!! I tried numerous things but the only thing that worked with my pup which is easy but a bit weird was put some of his excretion in the hole and fill it over. He doesn't bother with them any more but that doesn't mean when given the chance he won't try to dig a fresh hole haha.
I was also advised which sort of worked but not long term was sprinkle cajun pepper over the filled in holes, fill the hole with water and dunk his head in it(I didn't try this as he is a bit nervy), as well as if caught(which I only managed to do a few times) shoot him with a water gun(this was more like play time haha).

Do what dunk his head in water?! If you read I wasn't about to try that one as he is way to nervy. The cajun pepper I don't see anything wrong with that.

But you wouldn't want pepper in his eyes...I meant pepper in the water...

Well I do know that dogs don't care for pepper, but I think that there are better ways. I once met a person who had a Jack Russell that enjoyed digging holes. What good people they were to give the dog special places to dig. Each area had a different kind of soil to dig into like sand or mulch. I think if the dog is digging in the wrong spot I would use a spray repellent on the area (like Boundry) and say "NO"

haha I thought that was what you thought I meant no not pepper in the water. The pepper was to be sprinkled over the covered over holes! Not with the water.

The water was the other option which I wouldn't use with my dog.

But yeah about the special digging places I don't think that would work with my dog as he just digs randomly around the place like even just in the middle of the lawn(green grass with nice big holes haha) I think I might buy some trees and place them randomly round we have a garden designed by a pooch

I guess always the question is what's considered abusive and what is positive reinforcement. I have found that not every dog can be dealt with the same way.
