Default Crate problems...Peeing in crate at night HELP

I am having such horrible problems with my dog. I have a 7 month old Golden Retriever/lab mix female. We got her from this couple that was giving them away. We got her at 8 weeks old. She done fairely good with not peeing in the house. She has NEVER pooped in the house. But she has had several accidents (peeing) in the house. Im not sure where the previous owners kept her, in a crate, box im not sure. I have no way of contacting them.

Anyways, we have been having a problem with Valentine peeing in her box )plastic crate) at night. We leave her out during the day to roam the house, she does good. She has accidents every now and then but not alot. She hasnt had an accident in two weeks in the house. But she does get in her box during the day if we have to leave to go somewhere, or if we want to lay down and take a nap, or watch a movie or something and cant watch her. but shes not in her box a whole lot. Sometimes we will put her in her box cause she is just under our feet or while were eating, we also put her in her box to take naps as well. The biggest problem were having with her is, that she will not stop peeing in her box at night. She will go a week without peeing in her box at all at night, and then the next week she does it almost every night. She gets up almost every morning soaked (with pee, im sure of cause of the smell) its just sooo frustrating, Im tired of having to clean her crate out every morning. I dont understand her, she has done this since weve had her. She will go days without peeing in her box, then there are weeks she does it every night and wakes up of a morning soaked from head to toe. We too, take her water away after 8 for the night, she is fed twice a day, and we let her out like every 3-4 hours during the day. She gets let out like once a night. She usually sleeps all night long. But when we get up to let her out of a morning shes soaked. My husband lets her out (not every night) but most nights at about 4, cause thats when he goes to bed, and by the time morning is here which is around 7-8 she has already peed in her box. I thought she could hold it longer then that considering shes 7 months old??? If we dont get her broke from this now, its never gonna stop. How do i break her from peeing in her box??? Im getting very frustrated with this every morning. It needs to stop....What do i do????

My dog did that as well when she was a pup. I was told by my veterinarian that the crate was too big. I was using the crate to housetrain. The crate should be just big enough for the dog to turn around and lay down. When there's extra room, the dog will do its business at one end of the crate. Since I had a crate based on the size she would be, I took cardboard and used duct tape to hold it up to reduce the size of the crate.

I hope that helps.

Is your husband sure that the dog is actually taking care of business at 4:00, or does he just let the dog out for while and assume that the dog will go. I have two dogs that if I put them out, without actually being with them, they will just sit by the gate and not take care of business.

Question Crate Problems here too

Hello there,

I have a problem with my dog peeing and pooping in the crate.I have also been told that the crate is to big,so I am going to use a smaller one.My St Bernard puppy who is 13 wks old will pee and poop then proceed to walk in it all over, she does not seem to care she is walking in poo.So if you find a solution to your problem please advise me how.

I have had the same problem with my yorkie. He goes right in his crate but when I get home from work or errands he has peed and sometimes pooped in his crate. I ended up buying a larger kennel so he wouldnt need the dailey bath from rolling in his own feces.
I have tried leaving him free in the house, and he pees somewhere, though less often then in his kennel. I have also tried gating him off in the kitchen and he either jumps the extra high gate, or covers the whole floor in pee and feces.
I guess I've just got used to the fact that he will need a bath every other day. Its almost time to get a new crate and I'm thinking of getting a jumbo size one just so I dont have to bath him, just the kennel.

I always thought it was an anxiety thing since he was neglected by his former owner. I saved him 5 years ago when he was three. Hes a completly different dog in every other way.
