- 04-25-2009 - permalinkKingsbridge CavI found the newest edition of the book you recommended. I paid more (about $22) but am happy with the newer info and think I still got a steal through Amazon.com. A new edition starts at $82. I got a used in good condition copy and am eagerly awaiting it's arrival. Thanks for the recommendation. I'm sure I will get a lot of use from it.
I visited our nearby rescue kennel today and am realizing that I am a lot closer than I thought on a dream I have been thinking about. I want to board dogs and thought it would be prohibitively expensive. Turns out that I can manage wast the same way any dairy farmer does. My other concern was getting heavy fencing for the larger dogs and not having the funding at my finger tips. The shelter is putting me on a list to receive donations since they have all they need at this time. I'm very excited and am doubly glad that I have found such a valuable resource in th Dog Owner's Vet Handbook!

You gave such good advice to the one who ended up with a newborn pup on her doorstep. I'm wondering what book you were quoting from and is it available to the public? Sounds like a book that any dog breeder should have on the shelf!
Please do share! - 04-21-2009 - permalinkReadingladyI keep writing a post and it won't show up. I dont' get it! Thanks so much for your efforts. Th rest I wrote is way too long to rewrite! Hope it shows up.
- Sammy's first owner was the breeder. They decided to keep him, but later had to move to another state ( lame excuse! like you can't take a dog with you to another state) so they gave/sold him to some man. I don't know how long the man had him, but he gave Sammy to the lady I got Sammy from, and the lady had Sammy for one month. her excuse was that she did not have enough time to train him. He does have accidents. Since friday he has had about one accident a day. I am thinking since he was bounced around so much that he was not properly trained. He is about one year old, he will eventually learn, right? I take him out about every 2 hours and when he pees I give him treats and praise him.
I love to garden. In fact I start all of my veggies inside about 2 months before May. I love to start everything ( especially flowers ) by seed. We don't have a big yard ,but I alway have tomatoes, zuchinni, cucumbers, parsley, dill, and certain greens. I love fresh greens on my salad and our cockatiel loves greens and parsley, dill.
I know what you mean about the expression on Sammy's face. When we sit down and relax from time to time, he snuggles next to me and sleeps, but he starts up with a jerk several times to check if I'm still there, and he looks at me like..... oh OK you're here now, are you ever gonna leave, please don't. - Hi!
Sorry it's been so long, yes, Henry is doing sooo well. He is so happy now, and so am I! I have no idea what he is, I got him at the humane society and he was listed as a chow chow mix. He has black spots o his tongue so he has some in him. I thought he was a chow/german shepherd mix but he's now about 10 months and he's only about 27lbs...and hasn't grown in months. Haha. They made me neuter him before I could take him home from the humane society and he was only 6 weeks old and 2 1/2 lbs...so I'm pretty positive that it stunted his development (which I'm a little bit worried about behaviorally) and growth. I've done a ton of looking around the internet and he looks exactly like an akita/chow chow mix that I found, except they are about 70lbs...so I really think he's either that and extremely small because he got neutered so young, or I like to say he's a purebred Henry! He's his own special secret breed!

i can always spot your posts a mile off because of how long they are, i must say you are very knowledgable (excuse the spelling but too much wine to care right now)
i have a thirst for knowledge too and like to help out where i can too.
