Default Doberman Puppy Mix - safe for kids?

I adopted a wonderful puppy one month ago from Humane Society - got all of her shots, a crate, toys, food, blankets, etc. trained her to sit and come to me and fetch - she is wonderful with my grandbabies (ages 3 and 5) they are kind to her and she jumps on them constantly. She is extremely playful with our 14-year mixed terrier whom she is almost larger than at this time!
So - this is my problem - her markings indicated that she was a Rottie mix and the HS told us that she was a Rottie mix, however, since bringing her home she has morphed in to an absolute identical Doberman mix! Long legs, longer face, same markings, etc. The problem is that we have read and been told that Dobies can just snap - and I cannot have this happen - especially with young children around all of the time. What should I do - should I give her back to HS - is there anyway that her true breed could be determined (doggie DNA:???: ) Help - I love her, but time is running out if I want to be able to give her up to be adopted to someone that doesn't have children who would be able to love her as much as we do!! Thank you.

Hello,

We have owned quite a few mixed dogs, but never had any problems with them.

Our neighbor had 2 full-blooded Dobermans and they were wonderful with my daughter. Our dog trainer had pitbulls she would bring over while training our dogs and they were wonderful with my daughter also. (two of the breeds that get one of the worst raps).

I think a large part of it has to deal with how your puppy was raised and it sounds like yours would have a great home with you!

I think you need to do what feels best to you. Any dog can snap no matter what the breed.

Let us know what you chose to do. Good luck!

Default Thank you

Thank you for your thoughtful reply.....that is what is on my heart, also - and I want to give this puppy a chance!

I spoke to my vet and she recommended dog obedience training; she said that this will curtail any aggressive behavior before it had time to develop and that it would be more apparent then if Selah (puppy) has any bad tendencies.

I will be keeping a very close watch and will let you know. Thank you, again, for taking time to answer me....:-D :-D

I hear there not a good kids dog. But that story may have been jumbled up by a individual that had a bad exsperiance with them. I don't think that there is such a thing as a born to be bad dog I believe people make bad dogs! But you do have your few bad apples that have problems that make them bad. I had a 14 month old daughter and if your new companion is just as you say she is then I would not worry about it. Sounds like you made a wonderful choice. GoodLuck!

I have a 3-year old Dobie and he's a bigger baby than all the rest put together. Dobies have gotten a bad rep for two reasons - bad training and bad inter-breeding. Since your's is a mix, you don't need to worry about the bad breeding.

One note of caution though, a dobie usually doesn't realize his size. Mine still thinks he's a lap dog. When you go through the mouthing stage, there may be some scratches from his teeth. Just pop him on his nose and say "NO" in a loud firm voice and quit playing with him. Dobies love their masters and are very intelligent, so they learn to be careful really quick.

I believe its all in how you raise your pup. If you teach it at an early age not to play aggresively, no biting, correct it when it starts playing rough, then you will be just fine. Teach your children what is and is not acceptable to do with your pup. Lots of people have these breeds of dogs with no problems at all. Its the owners that have given them a bad name.
