You don't give us much information on what advice you need about the Golden Retrievers.

Default Goldens

Goldens need a lot of exercise! A good walk or run for 30 mins will do everyday! They shed LIKE CRAZY! My friend has hers shaved. They suffer from multiple problems like hip displasia and hot spots. Go to dogbreedinfo.com to know more! I love that website! Goldens are great with kids, though their big size can intimidate little kids. Okay watch dogs. Easy to train. Hope this helps! That is all I know about them.

Smile Golden Retriever Info

I am a married stay at home mother of 3 children ages 10, 5 and 2 1/2 years old. My children are not ramunctious yet they need an active dog to play with. They already have been taught how to help take care of a dog and how to properly behave around them. We have a medium to large sized fenced yard. I was wondering if it would be better to adopt a Golden Retriever from a rescue or get a puppy from a reputable breeder.

Default Goldens

You can get a puppy if you are ready for a puppy. But I would say if you are not experianced with puppies, then go ahead and get a full grown dog. I walk a Golden three times a week and he is 8yrs and is very sweet. My sister in law owned a white Golden for 8 yrs and hers was great with kids! So it just depends on the personality of the dog. I wouldn't get a Pitt Bull. How many times have we heard in the news about Pitt Bulls attacking kids? I mean I know that some of those are because the dogs are not trained and unsocial but unless you know Pitt Bulls well, I wouldn't get one.

dumdog1964, you make a good point! But I heard that the best bred dogs with excellent health and temperaments are not advertised in the newspaper. I was tempted to call and find out about possibly purchasing a Golden Retriever puppy that was listed in the paper. I guess I would be better off spending $700 or $800.00 on a purebred AKC Golden from a breeder than to risk spending $250 -$350.00 on a puppy that claims to be registered AKC but whose parents have not passed the health clearance exams.

I bought my boy, akc, GSD, notice the small letters for the akc. He was so ill about a week after we brought him home that I thought that he would die. The vet didn't say kennel cough, or just a cold, but I had to put about $300.oo into him with meds before I was sure that he would live. He was such a cute pup that I just had to take him and get him better. He will be 2 yrs. this March, and I am happy to have him, but the akc, I feel is nothing anymore. They need to redefine their, what? ways? I just know, that I was extremely disappointed in the pup I bought, and I just couldn't let this new baby die, so I spent lots of money, and it still is a bone of contention between me and my other half.

Default A bad dog/stupid owner story

Raggs is so right about the surprising visciousness of some Goldens. Many years ago, I made at least three decisions that resulted in a terrible experience. First, I went to a backyard breeder because he was hundreds of dollars cheaper than anybody else. Second, mistaking rambunctiousness and agressiveness for friendliness, I chose the one puppy of the litter that hurled herself at me from across the pen. The third mistake involved getting into an obedience class that used dominant training methods like jerking the leash and forcing the dog into various submissive positions, which undoubtably made my dominant aggressive dog even more dominant and aggressive. In months, she went from growling to biting and then, increasingly viscious biting. Then I got pregnant and, fearing what she might do to a child, I made the heartbreaking decision to give her to someone who lived on a farm, where she could at least run all day. I know a lot more now, but hopefully, you can benefit from my story.
