Hello-Great Dane Owner!
hello to all. I am new here and I am needing some help with a female dane. But first I wanted to say hellp to all. I have 3 beautiful Great danes that I love. I have one of my females that are pregnant. the problem is I noticed to late that she was in heat so I noticed Nov. 4th that she was in heat. So if I go by that day is brings me to around Jan 10 or Jan 15. Well today is the 16th
I have been going nuts. She is so huge, this is my first litter. I am not prepared at all. I have the whelping stuff and box and all but I am scared that something will happen. I thought she was in labor last week, her temp had dropped to 98. for a day or so, then she had discharge (clear), now she is sleeping all the time, stays in my butt. HA HA
Temp is normal again. No dicharge (sometimes).
When i leave to go for work I think she is realy stressed out.
When I come home I think she will have a heart attack, she is so happy to see me. I can't get over how much she has changed in the past month.
My questions is does anyone have tips on larger dogs whelping with large litters.. HER LAST LITTER WAS 17. That was before I had her...

Sorry. I know absolutely nothing about whelping large or small dogs. I've never been into breeding...but I sure do love a puppy! Nothing sweeter. But, please let us know how things go. I'm sure someone here will have some input for you. Good luck! Hope all goes well.

Okay woke up about 8;30 and sheba looked like she was about to poop o my carpet!!!!!!! I fussed at her. Since she has been in the house with is she never used the bathroom in the house. But then I seen some green discharge fly out. what was it. A PUPPY!!!!!!!!!!
8:30 then nothing for awhile, so at 10am I was really stressing out, didn't know what to do. Well she started pushing alittle then I felt and I felt legs and a tail. OH CRAP!!! I went nuts. The next contraction she had I pulled down towards her and it came out but it was stuck for awhile. I thought for sure it would be dead, the bad had already broke. But she was fine, a beautiful female fawn. He is so huge. It was very hard on shebas to pass her. Well another push an out flies another one back to back a huge black female. She is also okay. Then 2 hours later she has another black female. So I thought she was done. Her stomach was flat. Well 2 hours later her comes another black one also a female. So I have 5 beautiful pups. 3 huge black females 1 really big female fawn and the first pup that was born was the smallest one and he is the only male he is also black. So I got 4 healthy blacks and 1 healthy fawn.

This started at 8:30 and the lst one was born around 2:20. Today was just so stressful. If I would not have been here today she would have lost 4 of them, she couldn't get the big fawn out on her own, she was stuck. Like I said before she had 17 her first litter and she raised 14 I think. But my male she breed with is really big, and he spitts out big pups thats for sure, so If she would have had 17 pups this time she wouldn't have made it through. She was a real sport. But I have a question, I can't get her to use the bathroom, she will not leave the puppies at all. I even pulled on her and she will not budge.

Don't worry too much about her going to do her potty thing. When she really has to go, she will NOT want to any where near where they are. It is also normal for the mom not to have to go for awhile. Good Luck with your pups, and stop stressing, it sounds like she has things under control!!

she just went to relieve herself and she ran back to the pups, we got to really look at her when she was up and she really looks bad, like she hasn't eaten in a year. I am not going to breed her for awhile, maybe miss the next to heats, I think this was hard on her, and maybe i souldn't breed her again. I think she is really tired. anyway thanks and I will keep you posted

She will look ragged while nursing, and I hope that you are feeding her puppy food, as that will help her rebuild her strength more quickly. You could also give her eggs, whole eggs, shell and all, as the calcium will help alot. Just some ideas,,,,

hey thanks about the eggs, i did not know anything about the shell though, i will try that tonight. I also had the runt pass away last .night. I was even bottle feeding him, but he had to fight to much, the other were so much bigger. I also think she layed on him. He was so tiny that she wouldn't even know. Last night was really hard...... the others are doing great though. thanks for the info
