Default Help>>>puppy Coming Soon..

NEED HELP ASAP about method to use on housetraining..

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am picking up my puppy Cairn Terrier March 9..and I am veryyyyyy confused on method of housetraining: here are my hours for work.. I live exactly 10min. from home..

Monday 7am-1:30 (at worst)..6-61/2hrs, no break to come home
Tuesday 7am-5 (12-1..I come home for lunch)
Wednesday 11:30am (mostly 12:00)...11:30 only if there is an emergency..I work in dental-----3:30-4:30 to come home for lunch..and home at 8:00pm
Thursday 7-5..(12-1...to come home)
Friday..7-1..no break (worst case 1:30) (in summer we end at 12:00)

My breeder says to do 1/2blanket and 1/2 newspaper in the front of the crate...I am not so sure about that.. isn't that teaching the dog to soil it's den?? I have also been told to get an expen and connect the crate to it and put newspapers at the far and..away from the crate in the expen......I think that would be better in a sense because the pup won,t soil it's crate...but how and when would you transition the dog not to go on papers in the expen??? I live in a raised ranch and the expen would be upstairs..I have to go down one level of stairs to get the pup out to still train outside when I am home...arn,t you still teaching the dog to inside(the expen??) will that confuse the dog on training outside??? I do not have anyone who can come over to let the pup out miday..the time spans are 5-61/2 hrs at 9wks old that I cannot be there.
Some people tell me ooooh the pup can do this and others say no way...I want to start of right...PLEASE HELP WITH SUGGESTIONS>> I am running out of time here...

Hi,
I never had a problem with my dog (as a puppy) learning that it was okay to potty in his crate. He slept in it at night, and had an accident every night for awhile, but once he got a little older, he stopped, he didn't like going in it.

But, my preference when you're not there, is to get baby gates, and keep it blocked in the kitchen with several puppy pads, toys, and at least water, food if you're going to be gone for more than about 4 hours for such a small puppy.
