HI, Newb here! I have been checking online forums for dogs and I thought
I would try this one.
My story:
I have had dogs my entire life for as long as I can remember. Dogs I
Will cherish and never forget. I have taken care of a poodle named Muppet, a
Beagle mix named Snoopy, Two hunting dogs Named Stoney and Shelby, "They
Where my favorite", A English Setter named Jasper "Died way too young of hart Failure", a German Short Hair named Sissy, "she lived to be 18", and just
Recently My Great Pyrenees named Zeus has ran away. I always used as my
Father before me, a forced method of training. After losing Zeus I have had
A change of hart. When getting this dog my kids had made me promise of
Working with and training him, for along time I had left it up to them,
After a long wait, probably to long, I took more on myself. He was good dog,
Kind and gentle but had a bad habit of running off. Four months ago he ran
Off for good. We searched everywhere for him, shelters, pounds posted signs
And so forth. I don't think Zeus is ever coming home.
After seeing all the poor animals in the shelters, two weeks ago we decided to save a pup and picked up a little 12 week old, Shepherd Rotty mix and named her Cayenne. I also bought a book "The Dog Listener by Jan Fennell". I have now read almost the entire book. I am now dealing with self issues of guilt and shame, as I know, I failed Zeus. I know now, I could have done a much better job with him and he would probably still be here. I also have a new understanding of dogs and feel a great deal of hope with the new pup. It has only been two weeks and already she is sitting, coming and staying most the time. I am slowly getting her used to a leash, treats seem to take her mind off it as she still freaks out a little about it. She likes to bite my feet and ankles, it hurts but, I have refused to hit or discipline her, other than telling her no and maybe putting her in a time out. She does a lot better when she is calm, So far I am amazed.
Questions:
Has anyone used this book to train their dogs? All thoughts welcome.
I have a acre for her to run on, but also live in a rural area with coyotes. Would a electric permitter fence fence be a good idea to keep her home and safe? I don't think I could have contained Zeus with barbed wire and land mines.
Should I post this elsewhere in this forum to get a better response?
