Exclamation Help with home made dog food?

I am looking for information on what not to feed my dog as far as preparing his foods my self. I know not to feed grapes, chocolate and common sense tells me not to feed him stuff with sugar. I have been told that onions are not good for dogs? If this is true can anyone tell me why? I am a health concious person and eat a well balanced diet and exercise so I know what is good for me to eat but I just want to be sure that none of these things can harm my dog if he eats them.
Thanks
Adam

Question what to feed your best friend

Hi,
I am new to this site, and I have also been wondering about what to feed my babies. My sister got a K9 casserole on the internet a few years ago, and when this whole dog-food thing came up I just went back to it. It is basically chicken, brown rice, green beans, and shredded carrots. I cook the chicken breasts in chicken broth, add the carrots to the last half hour, cook the rice seperately, add everything together in a bowl, squish it up a little with the green beans, and put it into containers to freeze till I'm ready for it. I add a tablespoon or more to their dry food (what I heard was, a third each of lean meat, grains, and veggies, and watch the salt content if you use canned veggies) I have small dogs.
I have also heard they need some nutrients that we don't have in human food, but I don't know about that and I would like some advice on it if anyone has any. This is just what I am doing till I can get some more info on it. Hope it helps, does anyone else have some thoughts? Debbie
