Question seizures

Hello I am a new member and found the site by chance. Last night my dog who is about 12-13yrs old had a seizure/stroke. It was the most distressing experience for us all and we were informed by the vet that this could be a common occurance maybe once /twice daily. My husband and I are devastated to think he may have to cope with this and do not want him to suffer in any way. The vet thought it may have been a stroke however its now 24hrs on and he seems his same old self with no adverse affects thank goodness. He was given a steroid injection and was given 'Fortekor' 20mgs half tab per day plus 'Frusedale' 40mgs 2 tabs twice a day. We are still unsure as what really happened however talking about the traumatic episode certainly helps. Has anyone else experienced anything like this, we were told that it would have been more upsetting for us than it would have been for Tize however we find that hard to accept, also does anyone know what the tablets are used for ? Its good to know a site like this exists and there are fellow dog lovers like myself who will understand how heart wrenching it is to see an animal suffer xx

Hi, Tizelover.

How is Tize now? What was the seizure like? What exactly happened? The reason why I'm asking is because we used to have a beagle (since deceased from old age) that had seizures every once in a while - out of the blue he would just seize up from anywhere from 2-5 minutes. Then he would come out of them slowly, either have to poo or throw up and after about another hour it would be like nothing had happened until the next seizure.

Why does your vet say that this may happen once or twice a day? Did your vet take blood for bloodwork? Does he think it's due to a geriatric condition?

Don't borrow trouble yet. Believe me, I know how distressing it is to see your dog go through a seizure. But hopefully Tize won't have them often.

Hello JSC,

I just want to say thanks for taking the time to reply to me, Tize seems to have reverted back to his pre-seizure state. I dont know whether it is the tablets he is taking but his condition had improved even before the tablets so am not sure. His seizure started with him getting off from him bed with his lip raised as if he was snarling. He walked from the room and staggered a little, my husband went after him and within say 30 seconds he was panting and it seemed like he was choking or trying to catch his breath. He collapsed into my husbands arms and began to fit, shaking quite violently, with his tongue lolling and he was drooling excessively. My husband thought he was having a heart attack (however at this point we didnt know what to think/do etc,) the fit lasted about 1-2 mins, he couldnt stand afterwards, his eyes were glazed and his tongue was hanging out he couldnt put it back in. We rushed him to the vet, he couldnt sit down or stand and was pacing in circles banging into walls, doors etc, he seemed to lose his sight, he has cataracts anyway so his sight is restricted, but after the fit was left temporarily blinded, it took around 3-4 hrs for the confusion to pass and his sight to return. Before this episode sunday night he has had a few jitters, he will stand up after being asleep and shake slightly, we just put this down to tired old bones but now we think this may have been the begnning of his fit. He has not had another since and I think the vet told us he could live contentedly having one fit a day, and said if he experiences anymore, more than one a day, maybe 2-3 a day, a blood test will be taken to see if caused by an underlying prob. He did say if quality of life reduced by excessive fits maybe need to put him to sleep. We really do not even want to think of that however we do not want to put him thro unnecessary suffering xx Sorry its so long.

Am so sorry to hear about your cat, have also suffered a similar problem with an incompetant vet, was told that my cat that had been spayed was PREGNANT?? paid out for scans meds etc, only to be told 2 weeks later she (Bethany, cat) had aggressive cancer and needed to be put to sleep !! I appreciate what a difficult proffession it must be both mentally and physically, however when mistakes are made at the cost of a loved one it is heart breaking and would never be allowed for a human, my animals are part of my family and I am as emotionally attached to them all as I am my family and feel a little lost sometimes with regards to my animals wellbeing. I love them all very much and I know that is half the battle xx Sorry to rattle on again, im getting good at that !!

My boy seems to be back to his old dizzy self. Really thought that was it on Sunday so I am so relieved and maybe a little more prepared for the inevitable!! well in theory anyway as I dont think I will ever be prepared, is anyone?? Thanks again for taking the time to reply I feel an inner peace knowing there are other animal lovers out there who can reassure and offer advice when needed xx
