Hi, I'm new too and I also have a four month old puppy who I got when he was ten weeks old, I started walking him right away so he does okay on the leash most of the time, he loves to bite at the leash which drives me crazy . I live in the country so whenever we are far away from the road i let him off the leash and luckily he has never taken off but this would surely depend on the dogs temperment and terriers are know to run and chase and when they start running they don't stop i have been told. I was researching getting a west highland Terrier and learned alot about this. Therefore i would suggest doing off lesh training at a dog park or other enclosed area until your dog learns to come when called, mine does not come unless he is good and ready but I have discovered many methods for tricking him into coming closer like throwing a ball or stick 4-5 feet waway from me then when he comes to retreive the toy I drop a treat on the ground or bend down with a treat. Then I am able to grab his collar and put his leash back on. I take him right indoors and ignore him if he plays these games with me and I try to never run after him . If I walk away from him he usually follows when he relizes I am leaving. again I have the option of wide open spaces ,I don't take him off leash when we are in town or out in public. You mentioned you wanted advice about biting too. the only advice I have about this is don't let him do it AT ALL Our dog bit my son in the lip causing 6 stitches when the dog was 14 weeks old. We know he was just playing and at the time we thought he was just being a puppy and although we were training him we soon realized we were letting him away with way too much. We cracked down and became very consistent with saying "no biting" and putting him in his crate anytime he bit hard after he had been told not to. He learned very quickly and we are glad to say we are feeling very comfortable with how good he is doing. He almost never bites or nips now and when he starts getting over excited we make sure we calm him down or re-direct him to a different activity or do something like take him for a long walk to get rid of his energy. We do find at certain times a day he is more excited. Anyways hope this helps a little.
