I have 2 GSD Brutus and Nero.I Got them from a pet rescue. They, got them from a man who did not know his dog had puppies. So they are shy of humans. One is extremly shy. I need all the advise I can get. I have had them now for a year and a half. And we been to traing, dog parks, street fairs, and camping. They do great with other dogs but stay clear of people. Any suggestions. Minn

Thank you for the info. I have checked out most of the sites. They are what I have I have already suspected. No easy cure. I believe that Nero will always be shy. My world has changed since we adopted these two. Especially the way I view my friends and the way they handle there dogs. I have done so much and I do it for the love and well-being of these 2 dogs. I feel in another 2 years I will consider myself well educated in shy dog rehibilitation. I watched a show about wolfs and the order of the pack. I realize that I am the alpha and my Nero is the omega. When we go camping with a group of campers he keeps to the outside of the camp. Always keeping me in sight. If he can he will sneek by my side then out again. Brutus always by my side or between me and the rest of the campers. As long as they keep improving no matter how slowly I consider that good. It will never be a quick fix, I would like.

Something that is commonly used in dog training is association. Bascially, hand a small treat to friends and family when they visit. Have them approach your dog (not too close, not bending over... just step near them) then have them toss the treat to the dog. Pretty soon the dog will associate human contact with something positive. Right now, I assume it's assoicated with anxiety of some sort. As long as it doesn't turn aggressive I wouldn't be too concerned.
