Wink Sheltie-Corgi Mix

Hi, everyone,

I'm new here and have recently rescued a Sheltie Mix from a shelter here in Georgia. The foster mom could only tell me he was a Sheltie Mix. But my vets technician said she thought he might be a Sheltie-Corgi Mix due to the size of his feet and the spots on his legs and under his chin. So, after perusing the internet for pictures of Sheltie-Corgi Mix dogs, I believe she is right!

Baxter is a beautiful tri-color, calm and quiet. In fact, he rarely barks. Anyone else have a dog that hardly ever barks?! The only times I've heard him bark were during the night when he would stand up on the bed (he sleeps with me) and look out the window and either growl or bark mildly at something.

And, contrary to the foster mom's statement that he loves to play ball, Baxter could care less about playing ball. He just looks at it, like "that's interesting -- hope you are having fun!"

Baxter is a loving dog and loves attention. He is at my side all the time when I'm home, loves to ride in the car and to be outside going for a walk. He came fairly well trained -- knows some commands like "sit", "stay" and "come" and knows where "home" is when we are through being outside. I couldn't have asked for a better dog.

Hope to learn more about dogs and their personalities here!

That's a nice start for you and Baxter. How old is he?

He might be well trained and have good behavior, it might need more time to adjust before he show his playful attitude. We will be grateful to see some of his pictures! Anyway, welcome to ILD!

Wink Thanks for the welcomes....

Hi, Wishbone and Aggy,

Thanks for the warm welcomes. Yes, I've seen Baxter become more relaxed and more "at home" since my last post here. He's almost like a little kid, testing his limits. I was told by his foster mom that he is three years old. And my vet has not said any differently so we are saying he is three. He has shown his loyalty more and more. I was with my daughter lately at the hospital for almost three days straight (except to sleep at night -- my other daughter came to take Baxter out for me) and Baxter greeted me so excitedly when I returned, he was almost bouncing off the walls.

I have yet to be successful teaching him to "Heel". He is one of those
eager dogs (especially when he has to go out first thing in the morning!) who wants to be first out the door and down the stairs! But we are working on it.

My daughter and her new baby are now home with me and he is very good around the baby. He doesn't jump up on the sofa when she is laying there or anything. He seems to know she is little and he might hurt her!

Must see if I can find more pictures of him to upload here.

More later....

Hi,Atlanta lady.Welcome! I have a Tri-color Corgi too and 3 years old. She is 14 inches tall although average Corgi seems to be around 12 inch tall so,she could become Model for Corgi:-D

To teach not dash out whenever the door open, you can let her sit and open door a little and if she tries to butt-up to stand, you close the door.If she got it,then, you can name it like "Wait" and open door and you step out, then she steps out without dashing out. I did that when Palette was puppy.

For playing ball,if you make the ball game exciting, she would bark and butt wagging a lot. My dog loves ball so,when my husband was dayoff,he played ball with her but she was looking like "What" and did not show interest at all in his throwing ball while when I throw ball, she is butt wagging, exciting and get ready to go fetch. Difference with me and my husband is that he was just standing in yard, call her name and thow ball. When I do ball,I call her name and make a move with my hands with exciting tone of voice before actually throwing ball. I sometimes fake throwing ball(meaning,I act like I throw ball and she tries to find the ball but cannot find one and ball is actually in my hand behind my back) with my cue "Goooooo get it".She then realize ball is not there and come back to me barking and jump at me asking for real play.

I am sure you find interesting talk here in Forum.I am new too but I am enjoying this forum a lot.
