My puppy. nips, jumps, chews, fights
I have had my Border mix for about 4 months now. I got him when he was about 5 months old and he was not trained at all. He does not have accidents, he nows how to sit and do tricks ect. I take him to the park every morning for an hour when I wake-up to get all his energy out. I have been practicing reward based training and its not working.
My dog jumps and nips everyone he sees including me. I ignore him whenever he jumps on me and scream in pain when he nips. It seems like to me whenever a person or a dog cries in pain he nips more. He does not seem to care that his hurting people its fun for him and he keeps wagging his tail.
He also chews and steals everything within reach in the house. He knows its wrong because he does it when my back is turned. When i catch him in the act he quickly runs away like he never did anything. Its driving me crazy having to watch him 24-7 when I am home.
He also plays rough with dogs and does not stop when they have had enough. Sometimes to the point when the other dog has to fight him in order to make him stop. Of course being the napoleon like 35 pound dog he is he fights and does not back down. He fought a pitiful that was 75 pounds and cut the pitfalls face.
Does anyone have any suggestions because reward training like I learned from trainers does not work with him.
-Thanks

yea he wears a muzzle at all times now. one of those gentle leads. But he manages to still bite. He is nice with dogs and he loves everyone. He just does not understand that you cant put your teeth on everything and everyone. And when he pisses of the wrong dog he fights back. Nobody seems to get what to do he has like two personalities

i have just found this on a website but most the websites say the same things A. Puppies tend to nip a lot in play, and their pointy little milk teeth can easily puncture skin. Aside from the pain factor, a nipping puppy that does not learn to curb this behavior will often grow into a dog that uses his mouth for rough play. While the intention is benign, the damage can be great, and a dog bite, is a dog bite according to the law. By starting young, you can easily teach your puppy or young adult that mouthing is just not acceptable.
Yelp and Shun
The most effective method is the "Yelp and Shun" method.
Try "yelping" in a loud high-pitched voice when he bites. As soon as he lets go, turn away from him, and refuse to play any longer. This mimics the behaviour that his pack-mates would use when he gets out of line. Before long, your puppy will learn that using his mouth on his people cause his people to turn away from him.
Other methods that may work with your dog are:
Trade
Trade me that arm for this toy, and you'll recieve plenty of praise when your chewing is redirected to an appropriate outlet.
Instant Muzzle
When your puppy grabs your hand, flip it around on him and wrap it around his muzzle, holding his mouth closed for a few seconds.
do u take one of those dog ropes out with you so when u see he goes to bite u u can put that in the way as my bf dog is a border collie and we find he likes to play alot when his at the park

yea I got him when he was 5 months old so i had no chance to stop him when he was a puppy. ill try the toy thing. I actually used that idea at the park today when he was biting other dogs and it worked until he did not want the toy anymore. Im going to keep trying and hopefully he will start to learn.

Your dog is still a puppy, he needs training and attentions. I also heard about Yelp and shun over my friend with their nipping obsess attitude. Sometimes after hours of exercising outside, their dog was put in his crate and play with his chewing and gnaw toys.

i have similar problem with my dog... she plays roughly and loves to bite my hands whenever we play so what we did was let her bite her dog toys or whenever she starts biting we throw her toy so she will be more focus on the toy and bite or fetch it rather than our hands...
