Default Please Help

I have a 1 1/2 year old chihuahua, Gizmo. he seems to be constantly licking his legs which in turn it appears that he is lickcing the fur off of his legs. he has been doing this for about a month or so.

I also have a 2 1/2 year old Yorkie, Roscoe. Although we got Roscoe first the two dogs seem to get along pretty well. They like to play together. Roscoe likes to grab Gizmo's legs.

I am wondering if this behavior could be stress related, nervous habit, allergies, or anything I might have missed. I am also wondering how I can help him stop.

Thank you
Dana

Could be one or all. The first thing I would look at is food, are you feeding a high quality premium food? If so, then I would start with stress. I, too, have Chis and this fall I took in a foster dog (the foster boy from he**) who reeked total havoc on my pack. After 2 weeks, my 3lb Chi started licking her front paw, licked all the hair off and was headed for a lick granuloma. Thankfully, we turned it around. After the foster dog was placed, the behavior stopped and the hair has all grown back. YOu could try purchasing a fabulous, all natural homepathic product called Anxiety made by Homeopets. You can either place a few drops on the tongue or add it to the water bowl to keep the dog(s) on an even keel. The stuff REALLY works. I use it for dogs on transports who are not comfortable riding, and I use their TFLN for my boy who is totally freaked out by thunderstorms & fireworks.

Finally, there are some dogs that are just lickers which equates to a nervous/obsessive habit.

Is he causing a rash or anything of that nature from his licking? If so, you can ask you vet for some Genesis spray to see if it's an "itching" problem.
