I have a two year old akc registered cocker spaniel, i was planning on breeding her and I had her eyes and hips tested and certified and was just waiting until I was more educated and sure I was in a position to handle this. My daughter however took in a cocker spaniel that was about 8 months old as the owners lost their house they were going to take him to the pound. My female went into heat and I did my best to keep them seperate but obviously not enough as my female is pregant now. I took her to the vet and so far all seems well. I have read any and all information I can find, but as her 63rd day grows near I am nervous. I need advice, the vet was sort of helpful but I read the basics already.

you need to be concerned about brucellosis or STD's from either dog. has the male had a thorough vet check? did you get papers on him? from what registery?

sounds like you need to change vets altho you should not be surprised if they are disgruntled with the circumstances. this should have never happened, it was completely preventable

I did not mention that yes, I took the male dog to the vet and had every test that was reccomended. I know there are no STD's involved. I also now have the registration for the male. He is also AKC, I am in the process of changing it over now. I locked the male in a seperate room and they were not allowed together. My daughter however made the mistake of not putting the wood up on a child gate one time and apparently that is all it took. I did debate aborting the puppies but decided against that. I have no desire to bring more unwanted animals in this world, that is why I was waiting until I was sure I was ready. I cannot change yesterday, I can only look forward to a better tomorrow. I have neutered the male so this never happens and I am still debating on spaying my female.

that Debbie Jensen link I posted for you is the best I've seen for your needs.

have you had her X-rayed or ultra sounded?

if you have no desire to bring more unwanted puppies into the world I don't understand why you didn't spay her right away. there should be no doubt in your mind about doing it now as soon as the puppies are weaned & the vet will do it. it does prevent cancer, a usually fatal uterine infection & others

if you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem

Suebgone was right about unwanted puppies, but the puppies are coming now. Better do your best to give them home.
