Default Hiya everyone. Probs with Collie eating.

Hiya everyone,

This is all very new to me, however i am experiencing problems with my year old Border Collie who isn't eating as much as he prehaps should. Some days he will eat no problems however other days i have to stand over him to get his to eat anything like what he should. I have taken him to a vet and they can see no medical reason why he should not eat. Has anyone else experienced similar problems with their dogs. when he doesn't seem to want to eat he will stand over it and guard it from my other dog a springer (who is absolutely fine) and occasionally pick at his food. i have tried splitting his meals to smaller portions but this doesn't seem to work either. He doesn't seem interested in food at least 75% of the time. I have tried pretty much every type of dog food on the market and this is a last resort. other than his food issue he is a normal hyperactive border collie that enjoys chasing the washing machine and anything that moves on the TV.

Hope someone can help.

Thanks,

Katy

I feel alarmed with your Collie, I'm sure there's something wrong with him, let other vet take a close look at him. Also seek for advice for appropriate vitamin he can take to fill his nutrition needs. Let us know what happened then.

katy, how much real exercise is your dog getting? half hour to 45 minute jogs or runs? should be at least 2 a day plus some fetch or frisby.

you "standing over him" will only make him fearful & not eat. let the dog relax & feed them in seperate rooms.

as for trying every brand, find a holistic food & stick with it for both dogs.

I'll take Bruno to another vet this weekend to get a second opinion. My local vet didn't seem concerned as he is in a the normal weight range for a Border Collie he weighs 16 kg, however he appears thin and boney and me and my family feel he should have a bit more weight on him, as he is quite tall.

Me or my parner take him out everyday for about an hour and a half and he charges round off the lead in the country park with my Springer (Ralph), he never stops running.

I have tried seperating them to eat, and he is more concerned about what Ralph is doing than his own food. I think this may be because they are very close. I have tried leaving him and Ralph on their own to eat and Bruno just shows no interest and does something else like bring a toy to play with.

If he is eating his dinner then i leave him to it, however if he leaves it then i take him back to it, prehaps standing over him was the wrong phrase to use.

I found a natural food that was recommended for weight gain that he liked, and he ate it properly for about two weeks solid, then he suddenly decided that he didn't like it anymore. I persivered for a few days, but there is only so long he can go without eating and this is why I keep switching brands.
